I admit I'm insane. But so are the guys who met me at Lone Peak High School at 4:30 am for a track workout.  I had to go that early because of my work schedule, and I'm very grateful for the guys keeping me company.

Had a great workout.  Was my first real track workout since college.  I'm rusty, but it went well.  6 x 800m repeats (2:35, 2:28, 2:26, 2:22, 2:28).  Felt great and relaxed.  Never felt labored.  Felt a head cold coming on yesterday, so I wasn't up to par physically, but I'm still pleased.  Was chasing Scott the whole time -- sure is fun to train day in and day out with him (and the others in our group).  Scott said he felt fatigued -- I'm sure it was because he had a great speed session 2 days ago (my legs were fresh).

Had a migraine that began on the way to work today (I'm sure it had something to do with the fact that I just did my first real track workout in over 10 years).  I don't get migraines often (about once every few months), but they're sure not fun.  I first noticed spots in my vision while looking at traffic signs while driving.  Not good.  How would you have liked to be my first surgery patient this morning  -- pretty hard doing surgery when you can't see :-)  JUST KIDDING! (It had all resolved by the time I started surgery).  I have learned that when I first have symptoms of a migraine, I take naproxen and tylenol immediately and that helps quickly and effectively.

So glad you finally joined the blog! :)

Great first track workout...despite the head cold, you had a very solid workout. You still have a lot of speed left over from college!!

That's a good session Matt. I think sprinkling in some of these workouts (when the weather is good like it has been) is actually a good thing to do before you really get into the meat of your Boston buildup. It helps marathon effort feel more comfortable and having some efficient leg speed helps you run a faster pace at that same effort level.

Andrea: Thanks! I'm finally on the FRB. Took me long enough! We need to get you better Andrea. Hopefully your next visit with the Dr. goes well. As we discussed previously, you need to keep in the back of your mind other obscure diagnoses, such as the vague "sports hernia." There has to be an answer out there for you. I wish I had more to offer. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Jake: Thanks. And great advice -- I appreciate it. I agree completely. I ran a 6 mile race recently and 5:20 pace felt harder than I feel it should. Most of the reason is that I need a base, but part of it is that I haven't done any real speed yet. That's partly why I want to start some regular track workouts -- I need marathon-type pace to feel easier.

A well-balanced "base" includes both the mileage but also some elements of speed/tempo work as well... that way when you get into the hardest training, you don't have any major weaknesses in any areas.

Very well put Jake. Excellent advice.

Its something I'm trying to follow through w/ as well. Always easy to just hit marathon pace, marathon pace, marathon pace during base training. But getting out of the comfort zone once every couple workouts pays some really nice dividends.

Welcome to the blog! I remember you from BYU - I was a BYU "B team" girl in the days of Liz Jackson, Nan Evans Kennard, Lindsey Dunkley, etc. You have a great group of guys to train with! Hopefully I'll never need your services (in the near future anyways), but it's nice to know of someone I could trust if that day comes.

And wow, 4:30am - that is dedication.

Nicely done Matt. You'll find the speed workouts get more comfortable the more you do them. I agree with Jake on mixing them in at least somewhat often.

From Matt Poulsen on Thu, Dec 06, 2012 at 22:15:37 from 98.202.242.213

Jake: I agree! The more you get out of the comfort zone, the more that becomes your new comfort zone.

Melody: Thanks! Great to hear from you. I look forward to meeting you again sometime. Yes, hopefully you never need my help with injuries -- but if you do I'm happy to help.

Riley: Thank you. Was a good "first" track session. Boy am I sore now though. As you said, I just need to do it more often and I'll get used to it.
