Personal:

Married to Elizabeth (she got me running in 2003). We have three boys, Lucas (12) , Sam (8) and Ollie (5).

Many years ago, I read that the AVERAGE male is capable of a 2:40 marathon.  I decided to test that theory.  I began running in 2003 with Top of Utah as my first marathon (4:24).  I need 3 more minutes.

Doctor research today.  I received some more great recommendations from friends and called Dr. Kade Huntsman, Dr. Armen Khachatryan and Dr. Charles Rich.  Dr. Rich is a neurosurgeon and comes highly recommended from Dr. Russ Toronto, while the other two are well known orthopedic surgeons.  I'm not sure which is the best way to go, but the lack of control in my left foot has me leaning toward the neurosurgeon.

Today, I was definitely stronger and was able to shovel snow (light loads).  I can tell the fluid is draining off the nerve.  I just need it to go completely away!

Mark,

Are you still on the steroid? I'm on my last day of 10mg of Prednisone. I feel virtually no pain but the numbness, weakness, and cramping (in my left thigh to just below knee) has not gone away. Curious as to whether you had/are having a similar experience? I'm going to get an MRI regardless but I'm just holding my breath that the pain stays away after the steroids cycle out of my system.

Hello Neil,

I'm still on the prednisone. I started Thursday at x3 20mg each, then after three days went to x2 20mg each. Tomorrow I will be down to x1 20mg each for three more days then 1/2 table for 3 more days (so 6 days to go).

It is still uncomfortable to sit and I wake up once or twice a night with dull leg pain, but walking around helps. I can't walk on my heels, but I can on my toes. My left foot continues to tingle and not follow command; however, the leg pain is getting less everyday. Nasty cramp in my left calf last night with the weakness made it scary. I have not had any pain pills or muscle relaxers since Saturday.

Tomorrow I have an appointment for a back injection. I'll probably get it if I can regain control of my left foot.

Call around about your lower back MRI and get a CD copy. Prices vary a lot. I have insurance, but still have to pay a big deductible toward the MRI.

Let's stay in contact.

I just take one Norco at night now and Aleve during the day as needed, but it sounds like you're on a much higher dose of Prednisone and experienced more acute symptoms than me. I feel ok until I stand or walk around for a while.

Right now, I'm leaning toward waiting a few days to see if the inflammation stays away after I'm off the steroid before I get an MRI. My wife wants me to get it regardless but its just too darn expensive, and I'm cheap. ;) Good luck w/ the injection. Definitely stay in contact. Regards.
