About 1/4 of the roads were clear, the rest were crap!   I did not go my full five miles because as I was heading into the last 1/4 mile before I turn around and it was a steep downhill with a strong tailwind.   There was NO way I was going to run back up a steep hill on icey roads with a stiff headwind!  I am a wimp!  I had to run a bit creativly to get in close to 5 miles.  Everything felt great, except that I am really going to have to work on loving the winter runs.  They make me sad and irritated.  SPRING NOW!!!  I am moving!

Now YOU are the running winter warrior princess! Way to run creatively and make it through. Up hill on ice with a headwind..good decision not to do that one--that sounds like a wipeout waiting to happen. Winter running is certainly adventurous. You are officially HARDCORE!

From tarzan on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 12:58:23

Good job persevering in the miserable conditions. I want to create a 'bubble' that would weigh nothing, float around me as I run, and protect me from most of the bad weather.

From Smooth on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 13:06:02

WAY to get out there, my brave young road warrior princess. I hate it when the roads get narrowed by the snow banks...passing motorists giving me the dirty looks, snow plow guys are the scariest. GOOD for you in getting creative and smart thinking on cutting that hill out. Give yourself points for running in these conditions. I think winter running miles should count for double. So, there, you ran 8 miles today!!! :)

From Smooth on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 13:08:40

Oops, correction! You ran 9.8 miles today!!! What's 2 x 4.9. I can't do math...I'm having a brain freeze.

From leslie on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 13:48:27

I am impressed! Thats all I can say!!!

From Cal on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 16:03:53

Nice job Marion. Let me know if you figure out how to love these Winter runs.

(btw, being out there for 4.9 means you're already WAY beyond 'wimp' status!)

Thanks guys- I also got new shoes today so I ran about a 1/2 hour trying out shoes. I am so excited! I got 2 pairs! They are soft and sqishy. I love it!!!

From Kelli on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 18:47:48

I can not believe you went outside!! Way to go!!!

From leslie on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 18:50:18

Marion you're an animal!!! Are you doing your 11 miles outside tomorrow?

From marion on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 18:51:43

I am hard core now! (see Aprils comment!) :D

I ran into Sasha at Costco today and he gave me a great idea. He said that in the winter, he just runs his fastest when the roads are clear and then slow for the rest. He says you can do it because it never stays clear for very long. I am going to try that!

My shoes are getting wrapped for christmas and I really want to break them out tomorrow!!

From marion on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 18:53:33

Les- I am going to run as much as I can outside and then do the rest on the treadmill. I may do a bit on the treadmill to start and then head out for a bit.

Does it ruin the long run if it is all broken up?

From marion on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 18:55:53

I meant about Sasha's advice, that on the same run, the road has some clear dry spots while other spots are icy and slick- run fast on the nice spots and slowly on the crappy ones. Does that make more sense?

From leslie on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 18:56:40

Heck no! Everything and anything counts! You go Tiger!!! I may try to go outside too and see how it goes. Maybe I will run around my park with Odee and then finish up on the dreadmill, but then I would have to dress super warm and then shed the heavy clothes and go to the gym. What a whinner I am!

From marion on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 18:59:54

I was thinking that exact thing. I'll have to strip and redress and undress and get all sweaty and get all cold and then sweaty! :P

From Kelli on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 19:56:44

Actually, I kind of do not get sweaty when I run in the cold. So, as long as it is not snowing and you do not get wet, life is good, right? The real problem is when you come home soaked in snow!!!

Have fun you ladies, I am going to try to get the entire run outside somewhere. i do not know where---I just drove Ashly to her friends and the roads are a mess which means they will be sheets of ice tomorrow, but we will see!!! Maybe we need to be some snow shoes??
