The goal today was to break every record I could, including Walter's course record, my mile, my 5K, my 10K, and my half. Unfortunately they changed the course, eliminating the first .52 miles of downhill and replacing it with .52 miles of flat at the end, for a total time penalty of 31 seconds. This would make it much more challenging. I had also tried to get Walter to come down and race me, sort of as a superpacer, but he would not take the bait. It didn't end up mattering though. The start came and I saw Craig, who I beat last year, there as well as a few other fit-looking guys. As the gun went off I engaged my first-mile-is-free superpower to try for a new record, but alas I only got a 4:52. Still feeling good though and well out front I settled in to what I hoped would stay a sub 5 pace for a long time. Second mile was 5:05, drat! Third mile was 5 flat though and I had high hopes for the 4th mile which is the most downhill, but it came in at 4:55. OK, I was probably not going to get a course record even with the correction but I could hear people coming up on me fast, which was a real shock! In mile 4 I got passed by Craig Green and Jeff Olsen, and passed quickly. I bet they did mile 4 in 4:40. As he passed Craig said "Nice, I see you are saving something until the end." Dude! Are you serious? You are blasting me at my top speed and you think I am holding back? Crap he is fast. Well, he pulled ever so slowly ahead in each succeeding mile but I still held out hopes to nuke him in the flats like last year. I did get my 5K record though at 15:25 and things were looking good for the 10 K as well. But it was not to be, missed it by 10 seconds at 31:20 because even though mile 5 was a solid 5:06, mile 6 was a 5:18. In mile 7 I was catching the rubber burning twins but I had to stop and tie my shoe, arg. Even with that it was still a 5:17 so that was pretty good but they had gained quite a bit of distance anyway. Then things started to flatten out with miles 8-10 at 5:27, 5:23, and 5:35 through the big field. But Jeff was coming back to me! I passed him with authority in the middle of the flat part in the fields, but Craig was maintaining a solid eighth of a mile out front and things were looking grim. Into the rollers we went, last chance to grab him. Even with the last three miles at 5:45, 5:46, and 5:49, I was unable to overtake and he beat me by 50 seconds. But I got 1:09:17, which was a new PR by 21 seconds for this course given the 31 second correction!

That is an insane half course. I've wanted to run it just to see how it feels.

You could jump off Mt. Everest Steve. Maybe break one hour for the half?

From Steve on Mon, Sep 08, 2014 at 20:41:55 from 66.87.127.115

In some sections this is actually steeper than the Alta Peruvian was, if you can believe that.

From Dave Taylor on Mon, Sep 08, 2014 at 21:03:33 from 174.23.79.246

Oh, I believe it. It feels really fun while you run it, not so much the next day. Ow.

It's definitely a cheater course and helped me get an elite bib into CIM from being under 1:09. However, and I am writing an article in des news about this giving most runners that try to qualify for Boston or Olympic Time Qualify course, which right now only consists of Layton Marathon and Park City marathon, a huge disappointment. I went Into the national masters championships half in Florida as the possible winner of the race from my USATF times on these cheater courses. I took 5th with a 1:14 time. There are only a couple of master runners that can break 1:08 on a legit course from Utah that aren't on drugs.

Dang Walter, that's one of the most direct, honest views on Utah courses that I've read. Pretty cool.

From Walter on Wed, Sep 10, 2014 at 12:47:43 from 97.49.237.193

I may have the course record on that course and maybe it is an amazing time especially for Masters. But I can't feel good about that time till I bust it on a flat course. I don't want to be recognized by that. I don't want the * by my name and at the bottom it says *extreme downhill on the USATF national results. I want to be recognized like Dennis Simonaitis on a legit course. Or Iian Hunter. Then I will be happy to challenge you Dave. :)

Just speaking for myself here though. Right now I couldn't run the pace Dave or Walter did if I was in a box car racer. Good job, that was hauling! Also, Dennis S was recognized in 2012 by Running Times where they pick out one outstanding race of the year for a Master nationally in each category, 5k, 10k, marathon etc. The race he had submitted? 15:03 for a 5k at Running of The Leopards, the most downhill course in the country. So it's not always that simple.

From Dave Taylor on Wed, Sep 10, 2014 at 13:20:14 from 50.198.183.21

Walter you would destroy me on a legit course - I can only run about a 1:18 on a flat. But my body loves downhill so I can get closer to the greats if we all run the vertical. In fact I rate courses with a fun factor determined by how much faster than 1:18 I can run them, so Nebo gets a fun factor 9. I am hoping that BC gets a fun factor 8 at least this weekend. I am going to not run the whole week so I am fresh for it.

From Steve on Wed, Sep 10, 2014 at 13:31:38 from 66.87.126.122

You would have loved the old Alta Peruvian then. It was all about figuring out how to put the brakes on for five miles.

From Dave Taylor on Wed, Sep 10, 2014 at 13:35:19 from 50.198.183.21

I know, I am really sad I never got to run it but it was always the same day as a different must-run race (can't remember which)

From Walter on Wed, Sep 10, 2014 at 16:49:29 from 97.48.50.65

Still Dennis' half and full are still unabtainable by me. If I broke 1:08 on a flat course you guys wi hear about it. Lol it is bragging rights! Maybe rock and roll Arizona or CIM or Houston. That 5.7 mile I did at Hood to Coast was all in fun. It was cool to have the fastest time of that leg though. Good chip on my shoulder until I hit the rollers and flat and couldn't keep up with the guys that passed me on those legs. Even the masters runner that was on the other team. Shame shame. Utah runners have a chip on their shoulders from our easy courses. Im included. I've had this talk with Paul Petrerson. Run out if state and you'll get it quick.

From Walter on Wed, Sep 10, 2014 at 17:22:31 from 97.48.50.65

Oh and Steve I disagree with you not being able to keep up. Your Alta Peruvian 8k time of 23 minutes and change is pretty damn awesome even Meb had to look at the record twice and see the *extreme downhill at the bottom of USATF records for downhill. I think anyone that is over 40 and can hit 4:40 miles is pretty awesome even with drop. It takes serious leg turnover
