Short-Term Running Goals:

I'm just getting back into running after a long break to have my last child.  I would like to race some 10Ks, a half, and a marathon in the next 2 years.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Be the oldest woman to complete a marathon.  Yea!  But hopefully I will also complete some BEFORE I geezer up, like, before I'm 40 for sure.  I think it would be fun to dress up really strange for marathons, like impersonating celebrities and stuff.  Except I don't really like celebrities, as a rule, so maybe I'll have to stick to the age old question of ninja, or pirate.  I say ninja. *Hyah!*

I am happily married to James W (Cool Runnings). We have 3 boys and 1 opinionated little girl.  I love reading and I'm also a news junkie.  I am a stinker.

I don't think I'm going to be able to run today!  Yesterday on my treadmill run my right leg started hurting.  It was a really dull ache at first, but eventually started to really hurt.  I think it is some kind of cramp or strain in the muscle on the front of my leg between the knee and ankle.  There is definitely tightness.   It hurts a little today even when I am not doing anything,  I feel it a little more when I walk, and well, I'm not even going to try running until it goes away.  Massage and heat feel good on it.

It sounds like shin splints but maybe not, be careful and take it easy. In high school I had stress fractures in that same location on both legs so dont over do it. Sounds like you are pretty on top of it.

Note that the injury correlated with running hard, then holiday stuff, then less consistent running all of which was done on the treadmill. So we are probably seeing the 1-2-3 punch effect.

Like Marcie said it sound to me like you have a shin splint. Have your husband massage it as deep as you can stand, if you ice first it won't hurt as much. But it will hurt. When I get shin splints it usually means I need new shoes and make sure they have a good thumbs width between your big toe and the end of the shoe. Alot of injuries come form your shoes being to small. Make sure you ice after each run.

Oh Lybster! I'm sorry about the leg! Rest up. May I suggest some ibuprofen too to help reduce inflammation? Perhaps you are just now getting sore from some recent long runs. That happens to me sometimes a few days after a long run. Take it easy, enjoy your Sunday w/ your leg up and an ice pack!

I don't know why, but all through my life at every stage, people have called me "Lybster". Something to do with Saturday Night Live, I believe. Also "Lyberama"...

Thanks for all the great advice! I really think (hope) it is not shin splints, though. I had those in High School and they came on much more gradually than this. This reminds me more of that time I strained my quads pushing the jogging stroller with the super-flat tire. (That was a penalty for stupidness!) But I am sure I will be fine to run Painters, just give me a few days to work this out...

Lybi, you MUST feel better....get your husband to do everything that the mop machine won't! I actually have't registered for Painter's yet, should I hold off? (It's been on "the list" to do for a week and I haven't) But I still will if you think you are going to be o.k.! I'm sorry that you are having pain, I think the new shoes sound like a good idea too.... I ran in my not so great new ones and I think that I'm paying for that one, I hope that they are good for a shorter run.

Based on the area of tenderness from massage, it seemed more like some sort of strain of the tibialis anterior, no shin splints. No pain on the bone itself. I think you will be just fine - ice and ibuprofen would definitely help, as will getting off the treadmill. Someone made an interesting comment on the discussion forum regarding treadmills and how the moving belt actually causes you to go through the footstrike phase faster than normal. I think getting back on the roads this week should be good for you. Still have 2 weeks before painter's, don't worry about tapering.

Hubby is right on, too much treadmill running is not good. It is a great saver when needed, but, the foot strike and take off are much different than the road.

Take Care, listen to your hubby, I know it is hard to listen to the other half.

Actually James a true shin splint is caused from the tibalis anterior muscle pulling away form the bone, but I am glad to hear that is not tender along the bone. I always have shin splints on the posterior side and always thought that was shin splints untill I went to massage school. But usually any tenderness along the bone on either side is usually classified as a shin splint. But in any matter just keep up the massage and ice and I think you will be fine. I agree with the treadmill comment. I have been doing more treadmill running and noticed after sat. run tenderness in my calves and feet as well. So I am going to try and stay away from that thing.
