1 mile:  6:31

5K:  23:37

Half Marathon: 2:04

My first post-high school 5K, in which I thought I was going to die

The first time I won my age division.  Yippee!

My first half marathon, in which I attack Sasha

The time I beat my high school PR for the 5K (as a 31 year-old mommy of 3!)

My first 5K barefooted

Short-Term Running Goals:

I'm just getting back into running after a long break to have my last child.  I would like to race some 10Ks, a half, and a marathon in the next 2 years.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Be the oldest woman to complete a marathon.  Yea!  But hopefully I will also complete some BEFORE I geezer up, like, before I'm 40 for sure.  I think it would be fun to dress up really strange for marathons, like impersonating celebrities and stuff.  Except I don't really like celebrities, as a rule, so maybe I'll have to stick to the age old question of ninja, or pirate.  I say ninja. *Hyah!*

Personal:

I am happily married to James W (Cool Runnings). We have 3 boys and 1 opinionated little girl.  I love reading and I'm also a news junkie.  I am a stinker.

6 miles on the treadmill...slowly.  Eventful. (Groan...I do NOT want to tell you what happened.  I feel like such a dork!)  I was watching a movie and not paying very much attention to running, when suddenly I felt like someone grabbed my foot and pulled it HARD.  Actually I had drifted to the side and partially stepped off the moving belt.  So of course I did the logical thing and screamed and fell down.  In the process the big toe on my right foot somehow got folded back under itself for a second.  It is quite painful today (I am blogging this on Thurs.)  I am terrified that this may affect my ability to run this week.

It is almost like I am subconsciously sabotaging myself by flinging myself off hills and treadmills.  This is absolutely ridiculous.  So I am going to get this off my chest and hopefully I can stop hurting myself.  1.)  I don't want to run a marathon right now.  2.) I don't want to run a hot half marathon, so I may wait longer than just this fall to run my next half  3.) I don't want people to judge the efficacy of the blog or anyone's running advice by watching me.  If you want to see if Sasha knows what he is talking about when it comes to running, look at how many miles he logs without ever getting injured, and how well his kids are doing.  *Phew*  Now I feel better--much less inclined to try "sudden death" training techniques.  :)

No pressure Lybi, you go at your pace and do what you want to do.

Sorry about the fall, I seem to go in spurt when I hurt myself. One winter I think I fell around 20 times on the ice. But that hasn't happened sence. And one summer I sprained the same ankle 4 or 5 times. But I just keeped going and didn't let it hold me back. Yes it was alittle painful and maybe dumb, but I keeped on training. I have even cought my pinky toe on a book and broken it and still ran.

Oh boy, you do seem to have your share of accidents involving toes! I think I stepped off the belt couple of times too, while running on treadmills, but I was able to right myself back on by grabbing on the handles. But it depends how far off the belt you were, I guess. In any case, don't worry about making any particular race. When you feel ready, it won't be too hard to find a half to run. Hope you feel better soon!

Ouch! I was just going to check in and make sure you were OK after not having heard from you in a while. Hope your toe gets better soon.

I think it's great that you recognize what is and is not motivating you right now. It'll help you enjoy running more and not feel pressure to train intensely in this oppressive heat!

I am so sorry about the fall :( I think the worst thing about a treadmill misshap, is that they are so SCARY!!! ...and you're paranoid for a very long while.

As for the blog- I would hope/imagine that every runner on this sight knows exactly how you feel and has been right where you are at some point. It's also good for new runners to see that every run or every week or even month is not perfect or great. That's just life :)

You're awesome- hey what's with the barefooted running? I am a barefoot FREAK!!! (with the nasty feet to prove it ;)

From luzylew on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 19:02:49

You're right to adjust that pressure valve. Do your own thing always. My Dad always told me: do something you love and do it in a way that makes you want to do it for the rest of your life. Because if you quit, then you've lost. That means sometimes telling 'the world'(the one in your head) to back off while you find your own pace and time. Life is full of cycles. Doing what's best for you now is what's best. That's the beauty of running-- it's all yours to enjoy how you please.

I'm glad you are alright. You deserve some time off. Take it easy this week.

thanks for the encouragment, hope your toe gets better...treadmills are EVIL!

A measure of a runner is not in the fall, let the measure be the climb.

Ouch! Sorry about the injury, Lybi!!! If there's a half sometime close to Thanksgiving, I think we'll be in Phoenix around then again. I could try to run it with you or just cheer you as you come in at sub 1:50!!! ; )

From Jody on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 23:46:18

They come in groupings so maybe you are done! We can only hope. Take it easy and there are no expectations from anyone on the blog but to enjoy running!

Awwwww...Thanks for the understanding, everyone. I am especially grateful for Josse's comment. It is nice to know that I am not the only one to fall/injure myself many times within a short period of time. Luckily none of them have been serious. This toe thing is kind of weird. I can't move my toe at all--not because of pain, I just CAN'T. I send the signal and the toe doesn't move. James thinks I may have done something to a tendon or something. Anyway, I'm sure it will heal. And I'll just keep trying while it works on that.

And yes, treadmills are evil, but a necessary evil.

From Christi on Sat, Jun 21, 2008 at 09:56:29

Hey Lybster! I'm late reading about " the fall" that stinks! I hope the toe heals fast- sounds scary that you can't move it. Its summer in AZ, I would wait for fall for heavy duty training. Just enjoy the summer! Maybe reg. for some nice 5 or 10ks, or possibly travel to some cooler fun races if you can make a family trip around it. ENJOY the summer!

From Brent on Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 19:09:43

Lybi, I hope your big toe is ready for some jam or jamming. Injuries and setbacks, both physically and mentally, are part of our own personal running game. Your the kind of person when at the fork in the road, you take it. Get better soon, miss your blogging.
