My first post-high school 5K, in which I thought I was going to die

The first time I won my age division.  Yippee!

My first half marathon, in which I attack Sasha

The time I beat my high school PR for the 5K (as a 31 year-old mommy of 3!)

My first 5K barefooted

Short-Term Running Goals:

I'm just getting back into running after a long break to have my last child.  I would like to race some 10Ks, a half, and a marathon in the next 2 years.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Be the oldest woman to complete a marathon.  Yea!  But hopefully I will also complete some BEFORE I geezer up, like, before I'm 40 for sure.  I think it would be fun to dress up really strange for marathons, like impersonating celebrities and stuff.  Except I don't really like celebrities, as a rule, so maybe I'll have to stick to the age old question of ninja, or pirate.  I say ninja. *Hyah!*

Personal:

I am happily married to James W (Cool Runnings). We have 3 boys and 1 opinionated little girl.  I love reading and I'm also a news junkie.  I am a stinker.

4 miles with Christine outside in the freezing coldness.  Only 59 degrees.  (Sorry, that was low.)

I did my lower back exercises and my piriformis stretch.  Pace was about 1 min. a mile slower than easy pace.  No pain to speak of other than my shingles pain.

Doh!  I have shingles.  I had this little tiny rash the size of a quarter, but it stings/burns over a rather big area.  So I finally went to the Dr. to see what the heck was up.  Anyone ever have this before?  How long does it last?  It is rather annoying.  Am I supposed to try and stay away from everyone?  I've been walking around with it for several days--hope nobody gets it from me.   I'm thinking of all this stuff I should have asked my Dr., but I had no presence of mind at the time.  I'm on an antiviral Rx now.  So hopefully it will help.

PS I take back all that stuff about the evils of painkillers.

yes, it was FREEZING tonight, wasn't it? :-)

Sorry about the shingles. I have never had them, but hopefully they will go away quickly.

It's great that you're still getting in the miles, even though you don't feel 100%. Keep it up!!

From Scott Zincone on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 01:02:38

I had my first and hopefully last case of shingles ever last August. Mine was in my mouth, on my chin, up my cheek, on my scalp, and in my ear. Only on the left side of all those as it follows along a nerve. The doctor says it will not cross over to the other side, and mine never did. I had a few very rough days and nights of some very intense pain. I am not trying to scare you, but it is no use in lying about either. Because it was in my mouth eating was difficult. It hurt so much to chew my food. Just moving my mouth made my face hurt too. I was pretty much sipping soups and drinking from a straw. My pain medicine was my best friend. It would even hurt when I did not move at all. But eventually the the pain stopped, the sores stopped oozing, and the scabs fell off. No scars or anything like that either.

I just checked and I blogged about it on 8/08/2007.

I hope you do not have it as bad as I described. And I hope your husband is as good to you as my wife was to me back then. Get well soon!!!

From Michelle on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 10:00:04

Lybi. SHINGLES!!! Yuck! Never had them, my sweet little Jamie has (she's pretty much had everything!!!!) But they say they are very painful and we do give out lots of pain meds to people that come in with them!!! Hope you get over them soon! Glad your on the anti-viral med that should help speed things a bit!

So tell me about the back/piriformis stretches that the chiro told you to do.....if you can. I know showing is easier than telling! I feel like I would benefit from a few of those too!

You are a trooper to be out running with all that you are dealing with right now! That's why you are going to ROCK at Striders!!!!

From Kim on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 10:07:47

Lybi, My son had shingles when he was about 3 or 4. He was pretty miserable. The worst thing for him is he wondered if he would grow a chimney. It was hilarious! Did your doc tell you they are related to chicken pox? Others could catch that more easily than the shingles if I remember correctly. So if your kids haven't had chicken pox or the vaccine, you may want to keep a good eye out for spots on them. Good luck! You sure are a trooper!

From jtshad on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 10:09:31

My wife and mother in law have both had them (mother in law over Christmas) and I know they are painful. The antiviral meds will help, but they last a good couple of weeks but the pain starts to go down. They are a result of the chicken pox virus that still resides in your system and usually are brought on by stress...so try to relax.

From Tom on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 10:17:48

Sorry to hear about the shingles. Yuck! Way to hang tough! Hope they are gone quick.

However I'm not at all sorry about your "freezing cold" run at 59 degrees. Holy cow that is just balmy in my book! Gosh you probably had to wear a shirt with sleeves and everything...(maybe some slight sarcasm there).

From andee on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 11:12:56

Sorry to hear about the shingles. I hope they heal and are gone quickly.

59 degrees you say! I guess I will save my sympathy for the 110 degrees you will be running in during the summer.

From Lybi on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 11:49:30

Thanks for the concern, guys.

Geez Scott! You had the worst case of shingles of anyone I've ever known. I went back and read that entry. Yee-ouch! Sorry you had to go through that. Yes, James is very understanding. But I'm lucky. I can eat and everything. I just can't sit down. He he.

Michelle--the piriformis stretch is weird to explain. It's lying forward on the ground with one of your legs drawn up under you. Your knee goes to your chest and that foot is turned in (so the sole faces away from the midline). Wonder if you'll get it from that description... Hope Jamie feels better soon!

Kim, thankfully my kids have all had the vaccine. Hope I don't give anyone chicken pox!

Thanks for the info, jtshad. I will look forward to feeling better in a couple of weeks. Gulp.

Tom--I had to wear a LONG sleeve shirt, and I was still a little chilly. Imagine!

Andee, too true, too true. I laugh a little in the summer when people complain about running in 75-80 degrees.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 12:33:41

If Ted and I believed in murder we would kill to run in 59 degrees right now or any day for that matter! 59 degrees is ideal running temperature, that is when you set your PRs.

From Clay on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 13:32:18

I've had them, but they weren't bad enough to take any pain meds... My doctor said it was stress induced, but I don't know how accurate that is...

I'm with Sasha, I would kill to run in 59 degrees. Give me a break!!!

From laura on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 20:06:40

Oh, yuck, Lybi!! I actually have had shingles and they are uber-uncomfortable. I don't think I had it as bad as Scott Z. Mine were little red rashes that went in a line along my stomach. The doctor said they follow the nerves - thus the line. Mine felt extremely itchy and agitated. I just wanted to bite them out or something!! I hope yours go away soon! You should ask Mom about the lady in our ward who had Shingles for YEARS!!!! *shiver* Seth's chicken pox actually helped her get over them finally.

From MarcieJ on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 21:26:55

Sorry to hear about the shingles, that sounds miserable. I have never had them, actually I never even had the chicken pox, so dont come near me! lol Hope you get better fast!

From Christi on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 23:48:23

Lybi- Hey- when it rains it pours- huh?! Shingles now?! My younger sister has had shingles on the back of her neck and shoulders, sounds kinda similar to yours. This happened when she was a couple months post-partum (sp? I went to college-really!) Anyway I think it was due to her immune system being under stress. If you need info or want to talk to someone else who's had it I'm sure she'd be happy to chat w/ ya at ashwag1@yahoo.com. Anyway- good luck and hope it decides to move along soon!!

From Lybi on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 23:53:22

Thanks Christi. I am wondering now if the sickness I had last weekend was the start of this. Sometimes shingles starts with sickness--fever etc. and THEN comes the rash. It is making me grateful I didn't come to the FRB party and give MarcieJ chicken pox. (I think it was her that said she'd never had it.)

From Christi on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 23:57:29

I bet you're right- as I recall my sister's started with a fever and some flu/ bad cold-like symptoms, then the pain in her neck & shoulders came later. As much as we missed you at the Painter's weekend- I'm just glad you didn't try to travel while feeling so lousy. Hope you kick it quick!

From MarcieJ on Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 09:48:38

Just for your own peace of mind- if you had come you wouldnt have given me the chickenpox- they did a titer (i think thats what they call it) and I have had the virus- just never showed up in physical symtoms! Just take it easy and get some rest!
