I have ran this race since the first race 2 years ago.  My mom has participated in all 3 races as well.  We decided after the first year we would run it every year and improve our times with each run. The first one I ran in 33 minutes but the entire thing was down hill. The second one I stayed with my mom to try to help her improve her time. This year I decided to give it my all , and thats what I did.

I have had a crazy week this week and I can't say how proud and disapointed I am at the same time.  Monday we adopted our little boy we have had for the last 10 months. That was a wonderful time, but my stomack started to feel yucky as soon as we got to chilies. And basically as soon as we got home Iwas just down for the count.  Lets just say I have not had the stomack flu like that for at least 7 years. I was down until wednesday.  I lost 8 pds in those two days.

I knew I had this big race comming up so I did my best to get lost nutrients back. I felt like I was on the mend by wednesday night felt pretty good thursday and friday I had a ton of plants to plant in my garden so I got that done and was feeling a bit like my stomack issues were comming back.  I was really worried that i was going to be walking today.

After no sleep last night, I woke up feeling good and ready to go.   I decided to bring my 7 year old with me because she started asking me before bed if she could come because she wanted to be there when me or grandma won :)    I registered her and she stayed with my mom.

I was feeling so good and I was loving running through the gardens, then at about mile 2 I noticed pain in my knee again and I set it aside ad kept running. I had my garmin on and I knew i could finish good if I did not walk and with my previous knee pain as soon as I stopped and then tried to pick it back up it was way to painful. I was pretty much running and pure hard headedness by the time i hit that last little bit.  My garmin said 29.27 when I finished but the clock said 30. something. although we were pretty far back when the race stared and the timer had been going for a bit before I even went past it. They did use chips this year so as soon as the times are placed I will have to update this.

I felt a bit shaky and lightheaded but my knee hurt so bad nothing else was on my mind but that.  I tried to walk back into the garden to go meet back up with my mom and daughter but I had such a bad pain in my knee I almost fell and threw up or passed out. So I just sat down on a rock and waited.  I was so proud when I saw them run around the corner.  My mom looked great but my daughter was red as a beat.  They finished at 42 minutes or better. Very much improved time for my mom.

I tried walking around some at the end and it was not happening.  I got home had to go to a wedding and then I went to the insta care.  The doctor said that he thought I had a torn ligament in the side of my knee because I had so much give on the side of it. He said a knee is not supose to bend side ways. He said he would do an xray just to make sure but thought nothing would show up. Well turns out I have bone spures all along the side of my knee cap where the two bones have rubbed or something. He refered me on to a surgen put a huge brace on my knee so I could not bend it, gave me a shot of steroids for the swelling. (pretty puffy) he said I had to stay off of it for 1-2 weeks until I can  get in to the ortho specialist. He said they would have to have me on an anti inflamitory until the swelling went down to access things better anyways.     He basically said what I did to myself today was pure torcher and that I have had this injury for awhile for the bone growth to be that bad.

Despite this all I am proud that I made it through the week and I had my best 5k today. Disapointed becasue if I would not have had all the hurdles this week and a bumber knee I wonder what my time would have been.

Great job Katie, Sorry to hear about the knee. I would ask Amryrunner who he is going to for his knee.

Way to go KT. Me and my son (Falcon) were there. So sorry about your knee - hope you recover well from it.

Yes the clock seemed off, my Garmin had me about 20 seconds faster than the clock, also had it at 3.13 although that is close. We have run it the last 3 years. My son was disappointed they didnt give age group winners a medal although they did give him a huge bag of gummy bears for being the fastest kid (11th overall). I think the race may have been slower with the narrow winding path although it was a nice diversion from typical 5K. I probably wasnt that much ahead of you. Congrats on adopted son

I hate it when I accidentally send the comment off too soon!...

As I was saying...all the narrow twists and turns makes for a hard course to PR on. You did great! Keep it up! Maybe I'll get the chance to meet you sometime. You and your husband sound like great people to know. You seem to have lots of love to share with others!

I talked to my neighbor and she said you could have the slot but it would be in his name, so I told her never mind. Sorry!

You sound like a good person to know as well. I will be up and running soon. I better be anyways. I will try to make it to a 5k that you are in before the summer is out.

Way to gut it out for a nice finish. I imagine your daughter was very proud and excited to finish the race with mommy.

Good luck with the knee issues. Keep us updated!
