Running Accomplishments:

I started running in the fall of 2007.  I truly believe I was inspired to start running and I have seen some very big blessings come my way because of following that inspiration.

Ran Boston Marathon 2013 & 2014.  My favorite PRs:  2011 at the SG 1/2 and 5K where I ran the 5K in 22:22.    2013 Nebo 1/2 (downhill) 1:36:15

Short-Term Running Goals:

Long-Term Running Goals:

Running throughout life with Tom. Staying healthy and happy.

Learn from others, learn from myself, work hard, do my best, enjoy!

On running and on life.....

On occasion we need to make a second effort - and a third effort, and a fourth effort, and as many degrees of effort as may be required to accomplish what we strive to achieve.

I was able to run the first two miles with Tom.  He then took off for his faster miles and then we hooked up again for the big finish.  My right knee was bothering me a bit before the run so I was wearing a brace, but by mile 5 1/2 it was starting to hurt quite a bit.  It is the IT band on my right knee and that is what took me out of running last time.  I was out for about 2 years.  I am very worried about that happening again.  So Tom ran back to Novell to get the van while I waited for him to come and get me.  I am going to be really careful and try not to let this get as bad as it did last time.  I am icing at the moment and I may take a day off tomorrow.  We shall see.  If I do go out and it starts to hurt then I will stop.  Any and all advise is welcome!  Anyway, having this start up is kind of like the straw that broke the camel's back today.  Sorry about the tears Tom!  The past few years have helped me realize I have a never ending supply of tears and they are always available at a moment's notice!  Please, knee, don't cause me grief!

Kim hang in there with the IT Band. It sucks to get injured and its even worse to wait for it to heal! I like the idea of icing and take a day off or two. That won't hurt you either. I know it is hard to take time off but I think you know the consequences if you push to hard, so take it easy and be careful.

You will be in our prayers too, just to be safe.

Kim no apologies necessary on the tears, I understand completely.

I'm confident the IT band thing isn't going to get the best of us this time around. You did the right thing stopping as soon as the pain told you to stop. I think the plan is good for taking tomorrow off, and then Thursday morning we can experiment and try a very easy 2-3 miler where we'll be smart and stop at the first sign of any pain that doesn't seem quite right. If anything this will just maybe be a momentary blip in the training.

I am so sorry for you! I swear that injuries seem to be contagious right now. Take it easy. I wish I had and advice to dispense. The most important thing I have learned is to take it easy - This is the hardest to do.

Kim, I'm sorry that your knee is starting to bother you! Resting and taking time off is the worst when you want to just run! Right now after one run I'm out for about 4 days. I think that I'm going to try and push through the pain because rest just doesn't seem to help either so I may as well be running??? Good Luck!

So sorry to hear about your injury! I just watched Cody recover from that darn IT band. It is tedious to say the least. We are all behind you and rooting for you. I have no advice (sorry!) but all the support in the world. Hang in there!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I am taking today off and really taking it easy this week. It is a good week to take it easy on since we have Tom's dad's funeral on Friday and Saturday. I really hope that a few days rest and then some very easy miles will take care of it. I know many of you are battling your own injuries. Good luck to you!

Bethany: Cody has been down for a while hasn't he? If he has any advise for me I would love to have it while I am at the beginning of the injury. Hopefully I can keep it from getting as bad as his!

Kim-

My experience with ITBS was not fun. The pain is there for a reason. If it hurts, STOP. You can't just gut it out. Everyone's recovery time is different, and it depends on how much pain you ran through at the initial onset. First step, stop running immediately. I like your plan of taking a few days off. If I were you, I would take the rest of the week off and re-evaluate on Monday. Run 1 mile MAX. If it starts to get irritated at all STOP. (Treadmills are good for this as you don't have to walk home). I would also check out the discussion board thread on this topic and do the icing and heating. I will share tips later when I have more time.

Cody,

Thank you so much for taking time to give me some pointers! When it started hurting I probably ran/walked on it about a mile. Then I had Tom come and pick me up. I hope that mile didn't do too much damage! I will check the discussion board and learn a bit more. I appreciate your knowledge on the subject. Sorry you had to learn it first hand!
