AM- 8.5 on the trails of Cumberland Mtn State Park in Crossville, TN.  Generally nice, although 3 or so miles were way too overgrown and thorny.  If I don't get poison ivy, it is only because I am among the 20% of people who aren't allergic, because I ran through literally miles of the stuff.  Saw 1 deer, 0 people.  Nice way to start the day- now 8 hrs driving.  1:17, 8.5 miles.

I am one of those 20%. I can wallow in the stuff for hours without a problem.

Maybe it's my destiny to be a trail runner?

It's a sign, Rob. Quit resisting the inevitable. It's your destiny. Heck, your first ever ultra run was the R2R2R!!! Most trail runners dream of that for years, and you just banged it out as a newbie!

Thanks for the self esteem boost!

We are getting pretty fired up about it again this year. Things are even looking up for Cody.Don't you think?

You know, we all approach this sport from different angles. But I think if we're honest, those of us who take competition seriously are trying to prove something to ourselves and I feel like I still have a few things to prove on the roads.I'll be 50 in three years and I honestly believe that I can be one of the best in the 50-54 age group. It's a goal I set for myself a couple years ago and I want to stick to it.

Happy 4th to you and your family.

They don't have to be mutually exclusive. Doing some trail races or ultras doesn't mean you can't do road races. Heck, I just set my road 5k PR while training exclusively for a 100!
