Just a few hours ago, the Forest Service closed over half of the trails covered by the Waldo course.

The RD is working on alternates, but is not sure if it will be approved by the FS or not.  So, I made a decision at 5 am today to not go, figuring I can save the airfare money and use it for some other race.

Of course, I'm already second guessing myself- after all, life is about experiences, not money.  Who cares about money, anyways, in the long run.  If the race is cancelled, I'm sure I'll feel better, but I hope it isn't for the sake of the runners. As soon as I cancelled my flight, I remembered a conversation I had with Dr. David Horton before MMT 50 last year, when I told him I was thinking of not running due to sickness.  He immediately disagreed, saying to always start the race but be willing to DNF.  But if you don't start, you'll always wonder what could have been.  Well, now I'm wondering.  Live and learn, I guess.  I better find another race to do now.

Dale is awesome? Okay...

They covered the Waldo trails? Oh, great! Where's Waldo?

From Dale on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 08:12:24 from 69.10.215.11

That really really really sucks.

From Jon on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 08:19:58 from 74.177.125.155

I know, Dale. Well, we'll know if 4 or 5 hours if they are running the race. If cancelled, I guess my decision (with the best info I had) is vindicated. If not cancelled, I shoulda gone. Actually, my problem was waiting too long- by the time I decided that it might be worth going, I was too late to make the flight.

Travel drama for me this year, huh? Maybe I'll just drive to races from now on!

From Dale on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 08:25:33 from 69.10.215.11

Bah, you made the same call I probably would've given your situation. After all, even if its held its not the *real* course. Oh, and I'm sure your wife is happy you're not out running in the woods anywhere close to a wildfire....I'm already hearing from mine that I shouldn't run CCC100 next week if the fire near there is still burning.

From Jake K on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 08:49:51 from 155.100.226.54

Man you are having some bad luck w/ race logistics... the travel fiasco for Logan, and now this.

If the race is held - you'll second guess it a million times... that is, until you find something else to run. So try and do that and find something else to focus on. Racing in smoke would make a great story but would probably jack up your lungs and compromise your running for quite a while afterwards (not to mention your overall health).

Sorry to hear this, though. I was thinking you were ready to throw down another UROC type performance.

From Cody on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 10:27:52 from 107.0.33.130

Bummer, bummer, bummer....

That said, now come and run The Bear. Or as a second (distant)choice run RRR100.

Bummer...

From Paul on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 10:34:11 from 198.176.242.195

Bummer man. If you makes you feel any better, our air quality over here in CO is terrible because of the pacific northwest fires...

From Jake K on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 10:37:49 from 155.100.226.54

You know its a bad fire year when this is happening in the Pacific NW... jeez... that's the last place you would expect this to be a problem

From Jon on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 10:42:38 from 98.71.134.217

Cody- I actually considered the Bear as a fill in. But I am leaning more towards UROC again, even though I have a 50k the week after it.

Jake- I was going to do my best to have another UROC. But maybe I'll go back there to try to repeat the results!

From Adam RW on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 11:13:59 from 155.101.152.123

I'm sorry to hear that Jon. I was just checking in to get the update link to follow you. I think you made the right choice and now that it is made don't check back. Find another race and go from there.

From Dale on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 12:30:44 from 69.10.215.11

Ummmm, don't look. Seriously. Just find another race.

From Jake K on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 12:33:23 from 155.100.226.54

There's an XTerra race tomorrow right by you. Go win that!

From Rob Murphy on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 12:35:56 from 24.10.249.165

I have a different mindset. Don't always start the race. But if you do, Finish it.

From Jon on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 13:08:26 from 98.71.134.217

I guess the race is a go on a modified course- added 3 miles. And the forest service agreed to let them use most of the trails in the area that were closed. I hope everyone has a great race. I'm pretty bummed that I won't be there, that's for sure. Unfortunate situation.

I won the Xterra race last year, Jake, but reg is closed for this year.

From Dale on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 13:10:25 from 69.10.215.11

There's a 5:25pm that gets into Portland at 9:20....

From Jon on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 13:15:12 from 98.71.134.217

Thanks, Dale- I made my own bed, this time, now I get to sleep in it. Plus that would get me to the start around 1:30 am for a 5 am start. I will just have to live with my decision.

From Dale on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 13:16:22 from 69.10.215.11

Sorry, bad joke.

Probably best not to be out dodging forest fires anyway...

From Burt on Fri, Aug 17, 2012 at 15:59:14 from 72.223.86.148

Oh, I get it. There's another Dale.
