I've been looking forward to Top of Utah 1/2 as a way to cap off the "summer season," and since it fell 12 weeks before Philadelphia, the timing was perfect before I start my big buildup towards the marathon. I also figured this would be a good indicator of whether I was on the right track towards the OTQ.

Pre-race logistics were easy breezy. TOU does an awesome job organizing this race.  Andrea & I got on a bus around 5:20am, hung out w/ Paul and chatted a bit at the top, and before you know it, it was time to warmup and get rolling.

I took the lead off the start... Paul and I separated from the pack immediately. Splits down the canyon were 4:48, 4:58, 5:03, 4:55, 4:51, 4:56, 4:53. We pretty much ran together... I tried to make sure the pace was honest and would set us up for sub 66. I would get a little bit ahead at times, but not by much, and by the 5-6 mile mark we were running shoulder to shoulder.

Around 7.5 miles I got a bit of a sidestitch and Paul put a little gap on me. I was probably 5 seconds behind when we hit the 8 mile marker. For the rest of the race, he maintained a 5-10 second lead. I never was quite able to make a strong enough move to close the gap.

Miles 8-10 were 4:59, 5:05, 5:06. Ten mile split was 49:35

Now it was uphill time. Ugh. The hill from 10.5 - 12 is not easy. I missed the 11 mile split, but I ran 10-12 in 10:39. I think it was probably around 5:15/5:25 for those two miles. Paul kept running strong up ahead.

Crested the hill and tried to take advantage of the remaining downhill, with a goal of getting under 5 minutes. I ran the last mile in 4:58 and then the last 0.1 in 28 seconds.

Official time was 1:05:40. At first I thought I could have run faster, but a few hours later my perspective has changed. I'm really happy with this result... its probably the second best performance I've ever run (other than UVM). I guess at first I was a little disappointed because I didn't feel 100% today, but all things considered, its a big step forward for me. It was also great to have my parents and sister (and their dogs) there cheering me on at the 7 mile mark and the finish line.

After I finished, I ran back a bit to watch Andrea bring it home with another PR! Then ran about 4 miles cooldown w/ Paul and called it a day.

Now its time to buildup for the marathon. I am excited to see what happens this fall. Its going to be a fun journey.

There was a nice article about the race in the Herald Journal

Awesome awards! We weighed them on our kitchen scale when we got home... mine weighed 6 pounds! I barely have the upper body strength to pick it up :-)

Nice job, Jake. Paul's tough to beat, esp. on his home course. That's an awesome time, though- congrats.

Way to push. It's still an awesome time. That last 6 or 7 miles is tricky.

From Paul on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 16:21:27 from 24.10.141.104

Great job, you're doing everything right to get the OTQ, and I think this race points that you're on the path. Nice racing and chatting with you today.

From Adam RW on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 16:54:48 from 24.10.132.131

Congratulations on the PR. To have two "best" performances in the same calendar year is fantastic. Philly doesn't stand a chance!

From Burt on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 16:59:23 from 72.223.91.148

Holy smokes Jake! Imagine if you'd not had that little side stitch. I love that picture of you running. You look world class. No doubt you have an OTQ in you.

Great effort today. It was nice seeing you and Andrea. I wish I could have seen the last mile with you and Paul.

From Kelli on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 18:21:38 from 71.219.67.82

Fantastic race for both of you! Holy power couple!

Great perspective on the race, I think we always feel like we might have been able to go faster after the fact, but it is just cause we are so tired we can think straight!

Best of luck to you the rest of this year, I think things are going to go superbly well!

From Superfly on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 18:26:35 from 74.211.21.81

Great race Jake! Your hard work is definitely showing up. I'm not sure about starting a "big build up" before Philly...LOL. You'll be at like 200 mpw if you go any higher. But if it doesn't kill you it will make you stronger:) Stay healthy and your going to ROCK Philly harder than Balboa. Good luck man we all can't wait to see it happen.

From Jake K on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 19:01:08 from 67.177.21.60

I don't necessarily mean "big" in terms of more miles than I've already been running... but a combo of miles/workouts/importance of it all. Clyde I am also really happy that you didn't give me a nickname like "The Logan Missile." haha that is great! Hopefully Paul will change the title of his blog to reflect his new nickname.

From MichelleL on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 20:34:23 from 219.79.122.198

Nicely done Jake. You finished really strong--what a great race.

From Andrea on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 20:44:04 from 67.177.21.60

I'm so proud of you. Incredible time, exactly where you thought you would be. Next up - sea level half! I think there will be quite a PR compared to your current unaided PR.

From Little Bad Legs on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 22:40:00 from 68.186.75.3

Great job. Way to give it your best and come away with an incredible time. Can't wait to see what you do in Philly.

From Scott Ensign on Sun, Aug 28, 2011 at 02:56:30 from 67.40.112.231

nice job Jake, way to push Paul and keep him honest. come back and run next year- you and your wife are welcome to stay with me, I live just a half mile from the finish. beats the super 8 for price and convenience.

From Hamdog Alum on Sun, Aug 28, 2011 at 09:14:42 from 68.185.190.140

Way to go Jake! That race had to be alot of fun, it certainly has been fun to read about. Any race you gave it your best shot is always a good race no matter the outcome. It has to be exciting to reflect back on how far you've come in such a short amount of time. There is not a shred of doubt that you have the fitness and talent to OTQ, it's just a matter of stepping into the right race.

From Steve on Sun, Aug 28, 2011 at 10:02:12 from 76.27.108.183

Awesome race! You guys looked so fast out there.

From Seth on Sun, Aug 28, 2011 at 15:06:53 from 67.177.36.131

From Walter on Sun, Aug 28, 2011 at 16:57:04 from 24.2.69.110

Great job there on Saturday. I was wondering who you were. You lit it up at the start and helped push the pace. I am so amazed at you and Paul's speed! So, so awesome!
