PM - 6 miles. Horsepark loop w/ the birthday girl!
The NYC Marathon once again provided crystal clear examples of how to run the marathon (Mutai, Jeptoo) and how not to run the marathon (ie. don't try to bank a 3 minute lead in the first half!).

Unless you're Joan Benoit in the 1984 Olympics.

I'm not sure the rules that apply to Joan apply to most athletes.
But, I'll be thrilled if everyone else at CIM takes that approach :-)

I thought it was inspiring, It's cool to see someone just put it all out there. Maybe not a good strategy but inspiring. Had she stayed with the pack she probably wouldn't have ended up with a second place.
And, great job in your race, that too was inspiring.

But wouldn't you agree that its MORE inspiring to see someone run a smart race and actually win that way?

I suppose, but then they probably wouldn't have ran the little story about her that let me connect with her and want her to win.
What was her name again :)

I guess the point is, its not like her strategy completely failed, she ended up in second place, if she'd have ran a "smart" race and stayed with the pack I think Jeptoo still would have won, she was obviously the strongest runner.

I don't know if I agree...Deba had to fight the 15mph head wind the whole way. Maybe if she had stayed in the pack and made others do some of the work, she would've been able to outdo Jeptoo in the race. You never know.

Jeptoo has such perfect form that she would win no matter what :-)
I don't know how she doesn't tear her ACL on every step.
Rob - I know what you are saying, and to a certain extent agree. NYC is about place, not time. And she came in 2nd so you can't say she was a total idiot. If that guy on the bike didn't tell Jeptoo that she was 3 minutes back, she might not have started to close the gap in time, and Deba might have pulled it off.
But as someone who has wasted several good opportunities for fast times by stupidly letting myself get sucked out too fast, I'm using all of these examples to drum into my head that I need to be WAY more conservative next month at CIM.

If Deba would have practiced grabbing water bottles off tables at high speeds and not lost her cookies at mile 22 she might have won too.
I guess following cycling you see those inspirational breakaways pay off more often than in running. Of course then they just get busted for doping anyway.

It was nice to have the race on ESPN HD. Running is really becoming main stream.

Yasir - It was great to see ESPN covering the race. They did a pretty good job. If running keeps being broadcast in HD, I might have to upgrade to a modern TV :-)
