AM - 8 miles. Millcreek.

Despite the fact that there are about 30 races in Utah this weekend, I'm flying to Kansas City, MO this evening to run the Plaza 10K on Sunday. Before you say "well, that's random" I'll jump in and say that yep - it's pretty random! Here's how it happened... I had a Frontier voucher that I needed to use this fall, so I started looking for places I could fly to for ~$200 and corresponding races. Browsing led me to this one, and I really liked that it was a big, competitive, stand-alone 10K (that wasn't a sideshow latched on to a HM/Marathon). I shot an e-mail to the KC Running Company and they offered to give me a hotel room (sweet!). At that time (early August) I was leaning towards running the 1/2 at either Long Beach or Des Moines (mid-October), so the timing was great for a good 10K effort. I figured after TOU 1/2, I'd hit some speed workouts for a couple weeks and take a crack at lowering my PR (30:03). But then I ended up having the opportunity to take the trip to Colorado (anti-speed workouts!), and decided to push back my target HM to the Monumental 1/2 in early November. In hindsight, I realize I could have used my airfare voucher for that race.

Anyways, that's why I'm going to KC for 36 hours to run a 10K. The prize money is excellent, so I'm hoping that will draw a very competitive field. I think I can probably run ~30:30 if I run smart (negative splits). I'd be happy with that. My primary goal, however, is to win the race.

I think your primary goal should be not get mugged carrying around all the prize money. Kansas City is a sketchy place.

Good Luck. (on the race)

IF I won, I would obviously immediately spend the money by hiring Billy Blanks to teach me Tae Bo and become an unmuggable force on the mean streets of Kansas City.

good luck. have fun.

the flat as a pancake 5k is one race on that list of thirty that is not a race*. also, BC. that race is hilly.

Oops I meant to use the * to make a comment about how I'm really just dodging the BYU XC meet. I wasn't even being sarcastic about downhill for once!

Good luck! Have fun! Run fast! If you do get a chance to do Des Moines one year, it is a great race. They treat the elites wonderfully, and provide tons of support. The half marathon is completely flat.

Random? Sure

But, awesome? Absolutely.

Have fun! I am jealous. I would love to run a flat, sea level-ish 10k right now!

I may have spoken too soon... the rain in Colorado has screwed up Frontier's entire schedule... so I might not be getting there tonight. Good thing Sunday races are allowed in other places!

you're too skinny for tae bo Jake. better to invest in some nun chuks or a samurai sword and serve some justice that way :).

Well geez, so close yet so far! Welcome to the ghetto! At least the weather cooled down just in time.

Hope you made it somewhere, by sometime :-)

Have a great race Jake!

Best of luck in KC! The plaza is great. I lived near KC for several years (during residency). Great week, by the way (and great workouts). Hope you recover from your cold soon. I love your shoe modifications. I've modified shoes in a similar fashion a few times, for similar reasons. It works great.

Good luck! Hope travel issues resolve and you can make it to the race!

I made it, thanks to Steve the AVI8TR and his complimentary seatbelt extension. 11 second connection in Denver. Only Bolt could have done it quicker.
