AM - 5 miles. Ran a bunch of short loops from home, so I wouldn't have to walk far if I felt a twinge. It never happened, so I'll cautiously take that as a good sign. I've only run 3 miles in the past 6 days, so you would think some healing took place during that time (especially since I stopped running last week before it hurt, just when I had a sense that something was wrong).

I was flipping through Trail Running magazine last night (yep, I have a subscription because the photos are usually really cool). The latest issue devoted several pages to "should you smoke weed while running?" I could have written that article in one word!

Yay with the running! I could have written that article with one word too, but I am guessing we wouldn't have the same word :)

From Bam on Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 09:59:34 from 89.126.28.24

Dave Taylor has a sneaky little toke every morning and it doesn't seem to do him any harm - he's flying.

Great that the hammy's ok. Take it easy and just go with the flow, man:)

From Jake K on Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 10:02:28 from 67.177.11.154

It was a fairly/very stupid idea for a story. It makes someone like me think - "these races are so boring and noncompetitive that you have to get high to get through it?" Obviously that isn't the case, but even throwing that idea out there makes the sport look bad. It would be like Runner's World doing an article on - "Should you use EPO, just a LITTLE bit?"

A much better use of the space would have been a bunch of photos of puppies running around (on trails).

In fact, that's the magazine I'm going to start publishing on my own. Trail Puppies.

From Jake K on Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 10:03:50 from 67.177.11.154

Bam - haha, maybe that's what I should have done to take the edge off last week :-)

From Rachelle on Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 10:43:07 from 199.190.170.22

Huh too bad I didn't read this before my epic trail disaster over the weekend. If only I had known the secret behind trail running success...

Glad to see you running.

From allie on Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 11:03:34 from 161.38.221.168

that's a great idea for a new type of scavenger run. find the weed. find the puppies. first one to cross the line with a puppy and a few hits wins a fuel belt.

so much trail talk on the blog these days...

From Rob Murphy on Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 11:08:05 from 163.248.33.220

What would that one word be?

From Dave Taylor on Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 16:08:34 from 63.255.191.163

Maybe?

From Jake K on Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 16:10:57 from 24.2.76.138

I think the article must be a late April Fools joke. There's no way the author and the people he interviewed could have been serious about it. Although they did a great job making me believe that they thought this was a legitimate topic to break down.

From Jon on Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 20:03:08 from 107.203.52.135

Is this somewhat like reading Playboy for the articles?

Glad to hear I'm not the only subscriber to Trail Runner on here. It's my only subscription, and I've had it since I first moved to Utah 11 years ago.

There's some free online trail magazines from the UK and Australia that have even better pics, too.

From CollinAnderson on Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 21:50:58 from 70.208.22.179

I think Allie wins. Jake, it would be really fun to see you come out to one of the low-key marathon-distance trail races. Bosho, for example - if I can run 4:00 flat, I would think you could knock 15 minutes off the 3:47 record no problem.

From Lulu Walls on Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 22:01:14 from 166.70.240.95

Oh geeze, this isn't going to turn into some sort of trail vs road debate, is it :) All I can say is that the article did what any good article sets out to do, spur discussion and annoy people. I will have to get my hands on a copy now!

From Jake K on Tue, Apr 30, 2013 at 08:35:20 from 67.177.11.154

Jon - I was thinking the same thing w/ the Playboy analogy! I didn't know if using that word would get me banned, though.

Collin - Who would that be fun for? Not me! :-) Hopefully I'll stay retired from long trail races. I've done my time.

Lulu - good point. That is the intention of most articles after all. I'll sell you my copy for $10. Autographed.

From runningafterbabies on Tue, Apr 30, 2013 at 09:04:48 from 71.195.219.247

This is truly going to pay off - you are really smart.

I seriously cannot believe that article. I love your one word two letter response.

From DaleG on Tue, Apr 30, 2013 at 10:07:53 from 98.202.43.67

Jake, I also have a subscription to that magazine, but I haven't even looked at it yet. I can't believe they published that story.

Glad you were able to run pain free.

From seeaprilrun on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 17:25:53 from 68.102.189.33

What? lol. really? Curiousity--I really must read this article.

From Dave Taylor on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 19:55:41 from 174.23.74.19

I was just playing along with Bam, but went and read the article and it really doesn't look like a joke. You have to check it out. It's best read between 4 and 5 PM.

From Jake K on Wed, Jun 05, 2013 at 11:11:51 from 67.177.11.154

Update on this discussion :-)

http://goo.gl/yf5kv

The latest issue has a profile with Max King where he talks about doing plenty of speedwork for trail races, and also has a beautiful shot of Snowbird. Therefore the magazine has redeemed itself for the blunder.

From Lulu Walls on Wed, Jun 05, 2013 at 13:02:24 from 155.98.164.38

Oh geeze I really promised myself to stop having opinions... But what blunder? How boring would it be if you agreed to every thought in every magazine? Still think it is wonderful journalism although I forgot about it and still haven't read the article :)

From Jake K on Wed, Jun 05, 2013 at 13:20:39 from 67.177.11.154

Everyone is entitled to opinions, but let's face it - trail runner magazine isn't a place for hard-hitting journalism. Its fluff pieces, and meant to inspire, which it does. And considering that, when you have an outlet to promote the sport, there is somewhat of a shared responsibility to portray the sport we all love in a positive way, whether you have a blog that 10 people read or a magazine with thousands of subscribers.

Think about the late 90s/ early 2000s in the NBA. The "thug" style (along with a lot of guys getting caught smoking weed) nearly destroyed the image of the league. If David Stern was the commissioner of running, his head would have exploded if he read that article! I think while authors don't necessarily need to only show one side of things, they should be good ambassadors of the sport. This article was the opposite of that, for a lot of reasons.

Now, back to the month of June...

From Lulu Walls on Wed, Jun 05, 2013 at 13:39:31 from 155.98.164.38

I am just happy to hear that you love Trail Running :) I honestly had no idea!
