AM - 14 miles. LT Tempo/Reps: 2 x 5K in 15:22, 15:21. [Avg pace = 4:57/mile]. Tempo loop*. Half-mile jog (~3:30) b/w reps. 3 up, 4.5 down.

PM - 4 miles.

(*Measured out a modified version of the loop - cut out the section by Fritz's sister's house... making a 1.04 mile loop, so almost every mile was exactly the same, and the start/finish are within a few steps of each other.)

These two 5Ks would rank in the top half of my 5K races this year: 15:08, 15:09, 15:11 (short?), 15:21, 15:22, 15:26, 15:36, 15:40, 15:44, 15:59. Ugh - that doesn't say a whole lot about how well I've raced 5Ks! I'm just glad I broke 16 at the SH Relays.

One more hard-ish workout this weekend, then I'll do a full taper going into Indianapolis next weekend. No training through, no excuses. I don't care how many Kenyans or 1:04 guys are in the field... I'm going there with the intention of finishing better than second place for once. That may not be the most realistic goal, but if I keep my eyes on that prize, I'm confident things will fall into place.

Awesome workout and I absolutely admire and love the attitude. Your a great example Jake and I for one completely believe in your goal.

Thanks Rachelle. I'm excited to race next weekend. Nervous too, but more excited than nervous at least 51% of the time :-)

From fiddy on Wed, Oct 23, 2013 at 13:58:26 from 155.101.96.138

I think the possibly short 15:11 (15:25 pace?) was run in less than ideal circumstances, Layton wasn't a full effort, Dart Challenge you stopped for a bit. Still, your workouts never make sense.

From Jake K on Wed, Oct 23, 2013 at 14:01:44 from 67.177.11.154

I would say today's workout was about the same effort I ran on Saturday, so it definitely makes sense that the course was ~10 seconds short.

My half-marathon times have never matched up to any other races I've run (they would suggest I should run a lot faster at 5K/10K/Marathon)... so hopefully I can keep that trend going! :-)

Great attitude. I like to read that you have the hunger to dominate this race.

From Tara on Wed, Oct 23, 2013 at 14:51:12 from 75.169.137.75

It certainly says a lot about today's effort! Nice work!

From Jason D on Wed, Oct 23, 2013 at 18:59:14 from 24.1.80.94

Perfect. I find that my half times exceed expectations (i.e. calculators and workouts) and the marathon takes a VERY good day to perform comparable. As for 5ks, you aren't a 5k guy! But also, how many of those times were for races you won? I want a neat chart by morning. Ok...a quick scan of the highlights to the left will work as well.

From seeaprilrun on Wed, Oct 23, 2013 at 19:01:38 from 68.102.189.33

Love that fire! Go knock that half down!

From Jake K on Wed, Oct 23, 2013 at 19:53:25 from 67.177.11.154

I won a couple 5Ks against girls and at the Sugar House Relay carnival against people carrying pool floats and things like that.

You're spot on, though, Jason - the marathon makes all the small variables more important than they are in the half. So an equivalent performance requires more things being stacked in your favor - and then having the fitness to take advantages of those advantages!

Don't overthink it, just run fast! Maybe even a little bit faster :)

Jake, Arturio Barrios used to say; "I train for good luck" In that area you have definitely done the work. Now it's time.. Go and cash the check.

Wow - you're a stud, Jake! :) I love the attitude about Indy - makes me wish I was watching that finish instead of running!

From JS7781 on Thu, Oct 24, 2013 at 22:11:02 from 72.94.97.123

Best of luck in Indy! Looking forward to the race report.

Wow! Impressive, Jake! You are definitely fit.

From RileyCook on Fri, Oct 25, 2013 at 15:26:02 from 174.52.234.49

I for one am very excited to see the outcome of your race next weekend. I need you to run 1:03-1:04 to give me confidence I can do something similar at Big Sur...but hey no pressure! Haha. I think you'll do great. I love the mindset.

By the way that picture you have linked above in the comments made me laugh pretty good.

From Jake K on Fri, Oct 25, 2013 at 15:36:01 from 159.212.71.69

I'll run 1:03 if they use the same timing company as Sojo, where everyone just gets 2 minutes subtracted off their times!

From Dave Olson on Fri, Oct 25, 2013 at 16:30:36 from 67.182.237.143

Noramlly its the other way. Had it happen in a Half Marathon. They missed my time so gave me second place's time because I finished with a bunch of 5kers. Maybe it was the same timing company.
