Yes! Rest! But can he keep it up through the PM?

In June 2010 I went on a crazy trail run with Jun and Scott (2000 ft vert) I couldn't run for about 6 days. You wouldn't believe the pep I had in my legs by day 7. Resting is going to give you an advantage. I"m calling it now. Be strong.

I thought you had to be deathly ill or missing a leg to take a day off? I think this is the second day I've seen you take off. Coach Murphy knows best.

I don't have to take the afternoon off. Had I run last evening, then waited until Thursday morning, that would be approximately 36 hrs b/w runs. So by skipping last night and this morning, I still get the 36 hours - essentially, 2 days off from running. I round my mileage down, and my rest up.

Jason, being really sick or injured is no excuse for an off day! :-)

First a treadmill run and then a morning off. Cannot compute.
Hey Jake....what are strides? I have been running for nearly six years and everyone I have asked tells me something different. When I Google it, I can't seem to get a clear answer. Maybe I just can't wrap my head around it. LOL

Best morning workout of the week. :) Seriously as crazy as your probably going right now this was a very smart call and I'm sure your body really enjoyed the 10+ hours of sleep.

Dale - strides can mean a lot of things depending on who you ask, but I think of strides as 50-100 meter "pickups" or accelerations... not necessarily all-out sprints, but they are pretty fast. The idea is to work on good form and get your legs turning over quicker. Often they are done at the end of a run. Its a great way to finish on a high note but they aren't really taxing at all.
I don't do them nearly enough in the winter, because I don't like doing them on the roads. But once the snow melts, I'll try to do them a couple times a week on the grass or track.
I wish I got 10 hours of sleep. Too much stuff going on and couldn't shut my brain off! That's why it was easy to skip the morning run... not enough sleep, which is rare for me.

This is the most exciting thing that's happened on the blog in years. You should enter this as a race report.

Very exciting but I am curious to know how you will you figure out if this "day off" idea works. You could always say you would have run faster if you didn't take the day off but you could also say you would have run slower if you didn't. :) I just convince/force myself to run faster when I take a day or two off.

You are going to hit taper madness extreme!! I can't wait for your race, you are going to rock it!

I think performance has a lot more to do with what you did in the last 3 months as opposed to the last 3 days (assuming neither time span was made up of completely stupid behavior!).

At your level a day off is infinitely harder than a 20 mile run. Good luck!

Thanks for explaining. That makes sense about strides.
