The big take-home from the election is that Salt Lake voted for more parks and trails, while Colorado legalized pot. So maybe we'll move up a spot in the fittest state rankings after all!

How do they decide who is better shape? We should have a race, Utah against Colorado and get to the end of this once and for all.

To bad Paul defected.

Utah! With it's mountains and Valleys.

Utah! With it's canyons and streams.

You can go anywhere.

But theres none that compare.

THIS IS THE PLACE!

I think they pretty much always base it on the most accurate scientific indicator ever: BMI.

hahaha, too funny. I'm glad prop 1 passed! I think those signs on the Jordan River Parkway helped, I didn't know about the proposition until I saw them a few days ago.

Where is this list of Fittest States, and (I'm afraid to ask) where does Florida fit in?

From Jake K on Wed, Nov 07, 2012 at 12:47:03 from 155.100.226.191

I have no idea where the list is, I just remember that the Utah Marathon released a statement saying that Utah was #6.

Here is the document -

Its in there a few pages down.

The best part is that it says their goal is to have 40,000 runners by 2016!!!

Woo Woo not so fast. Top Cities is much better for us. Looks like we can cancel the race.

Tampa is one of the Fittest Cities? Really? Okayden.

What is going to happen between 2015 and 2016, when they go from 28,925 runners to 40,590 runners? And how can they be that specific? I just looked at the course profile. As a flat state guy, I'll tell 'ya, it looks intimidating. It starts off with a 17 mile, 600' climb? Yikes.

From Jake K on Wed, Nov 07, 2012 at 14:29:53 from 155.100.226.191

Nate Hornock's 2:38 on that course is one of the most under-rated performances of the year.

They can be that specific by "making up nonsensical numbers." Its done all the time in everything from politics to Fiddy's math lectures.

From RileyCook on Wed, Nov 07, 2012 at 16:17:48 from 132.3.57.68

I agree Hornock's 2:38 was very very solid on that course. The profile may say 600 feet of climb but it was more than that. There were several hills that were not shown on the profile. I know garmins are unreliable at best at elevation, but mine said 1700 feet of climbing.

I can't see that race growing much. No one wants to train hard for a marathon and run a difficult course like that.

From SlowJoe on Wed, Nov 07, 2012 at 17:50:38 from 69.131.141.92

Cool, Oklahoma is the 44th fittest state. In your face, Alabama!

So anyone wanna go to Colorado with me...you know....for a race or something?

From Rob Murphy on Wed, Nov 07, 2012 at 18:16:29 from 24.10.249.165

Joe - my wife wants to move to Colorado now. She misses her "college days".

From Jason D on Wed, Nov 07, 2012 at 19:29:52 from 24.1.80.94

I'm doing my best to get more cab drivers mad enough to chase me, so Lafayette can't keep Indiana down. The number of solid runners around the state are far outweighed (yes, I just did that) by the people who think exercise is weird.

Joe - We could always blame our heavy breathing on the elevation.

From allie on Wed, Nov 07, 2012 at 19:46:44 from 97.117.94.98

i am going to dedicate all of my time in 2013 to ensuring the the fittest state festival gets 40,591 runners.

fiddy is livid about your comment. you should see how hard he's pushing his giant calculator buttons.

From Rob on Wed, Nov 07, 2012 at 19:53:25 from 204.15.86.95

James, the answer is 11,665.

From prestonmadera on Wed, Nov 07, 2012 at 21:28:44 from 67.182.220.96

I was super happy to see that it passed as well, the trails that is :)

From Jake K on Thu, Nov 08, 2012 at 09:18:44 from 155.100.226.191

Allie - I feel bad for lumping those two things together. At least James' lectures don't cause everyone to get insanely annoying every 4 years.
