AM - 6.5 miles. Horsepark loops.

PM - 14 miles. Warmed up 1.5 miles, did a few strides, then went right into the workout - 2 x 5 miles in 26:16, 26:15 with a one mile jog in-between. Splits - 5:14, 5:19, 5:17, 5:17, 5:10, easy mile in 6:50, then 5:16, 5:17, 5:16, 5:14, 5:12. Cooled down another 1.5 miles.

Hot and windy this afternoon. I felt like I was battling a head-wind the whole time. I was very salty by the time I was finished. For both marathons last year, I did this workout 10 days before the race, and had a tendency to really hammer the second 5 mile segment... maybe too fast when I did it before Philly, looking back at that workout now. Since I did it a little further out, and on more tired legs this time, there was no point in being a workout hero today. I feel like I put in a good effort and got what I needed out of this without over-doing it. The wind made it more challenging than the previous times I've done this. The key for the next 2 weeks is the find the balance of enough faster running, but err on the side of doing slightly too little. Next week I'll do one workout, most likely, where I let 'em rip a bit.

Found out today that I will not be getting any fluid bottles on the course at Boston, "due to the depth and strength of the field." I didn't make the cut. Honestly, I think its fair. If I want to be get these kind of perks, I should run some elite-level times before I go asking for special treatment. Walk the walk before I talk the talk. I'll get my chance to do that very soon.

Group run tomorrow (10-15 miles) - 8:00am at Highland HS.

Good job at containing yourself and only running 6 miles this morning. That is some impressive self control. :)

From Jake K on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 10:16:31 from 155.100.226.54

It took a ridiculous amount of self-control. The trick was to set my alarm late enough so that is all I had time to run and not be late for work.

Great presents of mind to control your running fever! Boston is 16 days away and the urge to go out and run the souls of your shoes to get that last minute over-training in is ferocious. This is called taper madness......

I'm going to do a 10-12 miler out on the Porter Rockwell trail in Draper. Good luck on your run tomorrow. Run Happy and Safe, no dumb stuff....

Well, I'll still be scalding dogs this afternoon's workout :-)

Such a strong cycle. Boston is almost here, patience for now, then you can let it all loose. :)

From Jake K on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 10:55:02 from 155.100.226.54

it might be earlier - allie needs to be done by 10... stay tuned...

From Fritz on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 10:58:10 from 65.116.116.6

we can just run faster. Earlier is no big deal really. Temperature can't be an excuse and naps are possible.

From Dan Varga on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 11:12:12 from 65.44.116.4

We are meeting at Timpanogos High in Orem at 6:20, running to runner's corner for their waffle run (starts at 7), 3.5 there, 9-10 for waffle run, eat waffles, 3.5 back to high school, if anyone is interested. http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/79358445

Looks just shy of 16, but easy to add on more. Plus there's waffles.

8am guys. Before the wind picks up :-)

From Tara on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 12:08:00 from 75.169.156.220

I was thinking the same thing, 6 must have been hard for you. Waiting for the payoff now....

From runningafterbabies on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 20:03:25 from 71.195.219.247

Very nice workout. Of course you could have gone faster, but way to be smart and keep it at mp. I'm doing a similar workout tomorrow. I'm hoping for little to no wind... Haha!

From prlman on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 00:06:48 from 96.25.110.207

Very smart to keep it reigned in like you are keep yhe focus where it needs to be.. on the bigger picture. Awesome effort. We will be doing a big group run tomorrow morning (Riverton half)with the race pacers. Enjoy your run in the morning

Another strong effort at MP. Stay wise!! You are so ready for Boston.

From SlowJoe on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 16:13:25 from 74.197.87.208

Wow, great run. Sorry you are just too darn slow to get your own bottles at Boston though, geez.

From JasonD on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 18:13:41 from 24.1.80.94

Not sure what the cut off is, but it seems like anyone running 2:20-range should be able to get some treatment, but I am guessing they cut off at a certain point in the seeding. Too bad really; you've more than put your time and miles in.

From Jake K on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 18:23:04 from 67.177.21.60

Thanks Jason. It really is a logistical nightmare to coordinate bottles for dozens of runners, so I understand their decision. They can really only do it for the guys that have already proven themselves - not the ones that have the potential to make some noise. I view it as an additional challenge - no entitlement, everything has to be earned.

From Rachelle on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 21:30:29 from 66.7.127.115

You did this workout perfectly. So incredibly inspiring Jake. Way to go!!
