AM - 18 miles. AT Reps: 4-3-2-1 miles + 4 x 1/4 mile (1/4 mi jog b/w all reps). 3.5 warmup, 1.75 cooldown to make it a clean 18.

Splits: 21:43 (5:30, 5:29, 5:23, 5:21), 16:08 (5:20, 5:28, 5:20), 10:42 (5:15, 5:27), 5:12, 73, 76, 73, 73.

The wind woke me up a little after 4am and I laid there debating modifying the workout for a while, then finally decided to just get out of bed and go get it done. Gusty wind (up to 45mph this morning) is more of a mental challenge than anything else. I knew the workout would be a little slower than I was planning so I didn't pay attention to the watch and just ran it based on perceived effort (probably would have been a good session to use a HRM). I figure races aren't run in a bubble (well, indoor races are) so I didn't really have any excuses. Plus it was really warm outside for this time of year in the morning. Average pace for the whole run w/ warmup/cooldown/recoveries was 6:03, and I did the whole thing continuous, so this workout doubled as an almost long run.

PM - 6 miles easy.

And just so I don't look back and say "why was this workout so slow?"...

It's a long, cold, lonely, dry, hot, rainy, snowy, windy...

road to greatness.

But you're on it Jake!

From RileyCook on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 09:05:07 from 132.3.57.68

Huge workout Jake, and those paces aren't bad at all for a windy morning. Effort is what really counts and it sounds like you put in the right effort. Nice work.

From Fritz on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 09:11:19 from 65.116.116.6

Great run Jake. Looks like you should have run 18 miles directly south and then caught the bus.

From Jake K on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 09:12:48 from 155.100.226.191

Or taken the bus down to Draper, and then just run 5:00 pace back home.

From Fritz on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 09:16:20 from 65.116.116.6

Ah..apparently I can't read weather reports. S means a wind coming from the South? Good to know. Either way that's a solid workout.

From Adam RW on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 09:18:44 from 128.110.225.29

It was crazy this morning. Nice running in that wind. I'm 90% sure I'll be there Saturday. Any idea on pace and distance goals?

From Rachelle on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 09:19:45 from 159.212.71.199

Holy crap that is a huge workout on a Wednesday morning in the middle of a tornado! You never cease to amaze me Jake, nice work.

From Jake K on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 09:24:22 from 155.100.226.191

I'm planning to run ~20 w/ maybe a couple faster miles at the end.

You never know on the pace anymore... w/ groups this big, someone is always feeling good and starts stringing it out :-)

Last week we ran the first 10 in ~65, and that was on a flat path, so I'm guessing it'll be a bit slower on Wasatch.

From allie on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 10:25:51 from 161.38.221.168

that wind blew our front door open at 3am. yes, it was latched. it's possible (certain) that it's a very old door, but still...

From Jake K on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 10:34:22 from 155.100.226.191

or... could have been a ghost!

From SlowJoe on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 10:46:12 from 155.219.241.10

Yikes, hope you had a good east-west road; I do, and it's been my saving grace on days like that. Still a great workout.

From Jake K on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 10:57:38 from 155.100.226.191

That would have been a great suggestion around 5am, Joe. I did the workout on my usual tempo loop, which mainly runs N-S. http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/159446407

When we had the endless S wind last spring, I did a handful of my big workouts on the airport frontage road, which runs E-W

From SlowJoe on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 11:07:22 from 155.219.241.10

ahh, yuck, you definitely got a face full of wind every lap. Feel free to consult me for all your route planning needs in the future. I go to great lengths to make things easy on myself.

From joebell1981 on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 11:48:48 from 108.59.48.1

Killer workout, Jake! I'm gonna steal it ! :) Probably cant recreate the wind, though... :)

You are a great runner, man :)

From Jake K on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 12:29:49 from 155.100.226.191

You don't want to re-create the wind!

This is a workout that can be applied in a couple different ways (in my opinion). The first is like I did it today - a good way to get in some volume of high end aerobic miles - almost like a tempo run since the rest is short... but since there is a little bit of rest, it doesn't beat you up as much.

The other way I've done this session is a sharpening / peaking workout, closer to a target marathon. In that case, hit the 4-3 @ goal pace, take a little extra rest (1/2 mi) and then really hammer the 2-1 portion of it... HM to 10K pace.

The big boy version is 5-4-3-2-1 but I haven't attempted that one yet :-)

From Jake K on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 12:34:30 from 155.100.226.191

When I was writing out the schedule before my first marathon, the key workouts I wrote down were 13 @ MP, 2 x 5, and 4-3-2-1.

Only afterwards I went back and looked at some of Paul's marathon buildups... he does essentially the same things. So I figured I was on the right track w/ those.

Now I've tweaked some things, but those workouts remain a staple in my program.

From Superfly on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 12:40:57 from 74.211.21.81

Great job in the wind. I always wimp out and let it beat me up.

From Bam on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 13:15:42 from 89.126.28.24

That's an excellent session in those conditions.

I like how you're approaching your training and I'm sure that you'll be rewarded with some great PR's.

Don't shy away from the fizzer sessions - in Hadley's philosophy they are essential in the fundamental period: they're the sessions that give you the pop to bust up your 5k PR and help you cope with the longer efforts, which will ultimately enable you to do some savage damage to 2:20.

Great stuff, especially when put into context over the last 10-14 days of training.

From Jake K on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 13:22:52 from 155.100.226.191

You're going to see a lot of that in the next couple weeks. Especially if I am able to stay in (warmer) Phoenix for a full 10 days over the holidays. It'll be something of a 5K-HM microcycle.

From Bam on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 13:27:01 from 89.126.28.24

Good man. Can't wait to see how you go...

From mike⇒nelson on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 13:41:59 from 199.127.123.162

Wow! Great workout Jake. I'll definitely have to try that one some day...down a hill, with a tail wind.

From Matt Schreiber on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 13:56:10 from 66.17.102.185

Nice job bucking that wind. That's out of hand.

From steve ash on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 14:09:07 from 207.135.129.4

Very nice Jake. Amazing workout man.

From Matt Poulsen on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 17:53:18 from 98.202.242.213

You are an animal Jake! Excellent job! I knew you had some insanity in you that would drive you to run as early as I do :) Smart move getting your butt out of bed the moment you began thinking of changing your workout. That is exactly my strategy -- stop thinking about it and just get it done -- regardless of conditions.

From Jake K on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 18:36:29 from 67.177.11.154

That's it Matt - unless the roads are covered in ice, you can always get it in.

From Matt Poulsen on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 20:46:48 from 98.202.242.213

You got it! A man after my own kind. I love it!

From Ken Bess on Thu, Dec 13, 2012 at 08:52:42 from 174.52.148.34

You're a monster Jake!
