Ryan Hall announced this morning that he is going to be coached by Renato Canova. I think this is a very exciting move... I'm a huge fan of Canova's methodology. While I don't think it can be applied to recreational runners and even for someone like me its needs some tweaking... a guy with Hall's ability level has the potential to flourish under the system. And I have to make the obvious joke - if his current coach got dropped in favor of Canova, what does that say about Canova? :-)

If you want some information overload, read this thread (good summary document available for download linked in that one), this thread, this blog, and these training programs.

Got a kick out of this comment on the message boards... "Two of Letsrun's most controversial figures in one convenient package. It's like a comic book dream team!"

I read that comment too on the message board and got a chuckle too.

Should be interesting to see how that works out. Could take some time for results to really be seen.

Yeah I hope people aren't expecting him to win Boston this spring. It will take some time. But, I like that he's willing to make a switch and I think Canova has a lot of respect for Hall as well, so it could be a great pairing for them both. Hall will get a chance to prove the nay-sayers wrong (AGAIN!) and Canova will get a chance to prove his system works - its not "just" that he is working w/ super-talented athletes.

Not that Hall isn't super-talented as well... maybe I should have said super-talented east african athletes.

I agree and think it's a smart choice. He could end up really making a jump. Not only from just the training but from running with the others there :). It will be fun to watch.

I agree with you, Jake. Hall should flourish under Canova.

Just caught up on your training and your plans after my hiatus (Internet provider change - things take forever over here). You're going well and I like how you have incorporated a more balanced approach to your training - you too should flourish.

Hey we were wondering what happened to you!

It comes back quick. Three weeks ago I was feeling really out of shape, wondering if I let it go too far... and now I'm already feeling ready to run down the midnight train to hell :-)

You'll like what I have planned for this cycle. A good mix of different types of workouts for the fundamental phase, then I'll do a very marathon specific phase starting in mid to late January. Going to build a well-balanced base that should hopefully get me a good marathon in the spring and then even better racing beyond that. Andrea has designed a "nutrition protocol" for me to follow to increase the amount of fluids I can tolerate taking during the marathon. I think that will make a noticeable difference for me as well.

Andrea knows the way to a man's heart is through his ability to increase his fluid intake:)

Your training's looking great and I'm sure you'll bust up the 2:18.

I think next year will be a big year for many of the FRB crew.
