AM - 10 miles up to work.

I think I'm making some progress with my achilles. I had to temporarily ditch the brace/strap I wore last weekend because it was bruising my lateral mallelous. Wearing more shoe during the work day (ie. more heel lift) and less shoe while I'm running seems to help. Lots of massage, ice, and eccentric exercises. Keeping the calf muscles very loose is key - but I've also found that stretching them actually makes the injury worse... better to use massage and a heating pack to achieve the same goal.

PM - 5.5 miles, met Andrea and finished at SHP.

Now I gotta start my Achilles PT for the night. Andrea made me an extensive spreadsheet of all this stuff I need to do... so she can keep track when she's in Brazil for the next couple weeks... its exhausting!

I agree on injuries and stretching. Once I had a slight pain on my left heel. I started stretching it on the stairs and I felt a slight tear. That was many years ago.

Its very much injury specific... in the case of the achilles , some stretches are like tugging at a frayed rope - its just going to pull the fibers apart and make it worse. For other injuries, especially once you get past the first couple days, stretching can be very beneficial. Like all things in life - "it depends"!

Glad you are making progress and being proactive. I know your not the biggest fan of sports massage but it may be something to consider. Josse uses this fancy tool (graston?) on my IT band and legs and I have felt so much better since I started getting this done. Believe me I was completely against/scared of it for the longest time but I really think it has been beneficial.

I've come around on the massage... Andrea is quite good at it, and I think she'll agree that I can handle a lot more than I used to be able to. iPad is the key - I just zone out on that and let Andrea fix me every night. Now when she goes to Brazil, I'll need to figure out a plan B.

I agree that Graston or ASTYM can be beneficial. I just use a good, dull butter knife or a large spoon and lotion, and I swear by it. There are those who dislike it, though. You can probably YouTube ASTYM and Achilles to find proper technique. Be careful with that Achilles, speaking as the wife of a former rupturee.

i feel the need to tell the story of when james used a wrench to "massage out" my tibial stress fracture. that was the best day (to be fair, it was my idea).

glad there is progress. follow that spreadsheet!

So smart not to stretch. Last April when my calf started hurting, I'm pretty sure I stretched it into a bigger injury. Never again. Sounds like your on the right track. When did the achilles start acting up?

Kelli S. had graston done on hers and it worked pretty quick for her.

Sounds like some good progress, Jake. Great news!
