Keeping with the recovery plan for this week, I did an easy 8 miler today. It was a great morning to run (around 48 degrees) and I felt really good. It was one of those days when you feel like you can really push the pace without any problem. Even though I wanted to run fast I tried to stick with my plan and keep it easy. Hopefully, what this is telling me is that I am recovering from the race last Sat and will be ready to go next week when I start working on my 10k speed.

Tomorrow will be a rest day since we are planning a day with the kids for their fall break.

Good idea to hold back on the pace. Tomorrow, still try to get as many miles in as the time will permit.

Regarding your goal to work on speed - first, you are not using the speed you already have optimally. You would get about 3:10-3:15 marathon if you did, going off your 5 K PR of 19:53. Second, usually with this kind of discrepancy between 5 K and the marathon your 5 K speed will improve just off solid marathon focused training which involves a lot of aerobic conditioning. So at this point, I would focus on building your mileage, run occasional tempo runs, race shorter races, and just watch your progress, but do not specifically train for a 5 K.

Sasha,

Thanks for the advice. I have probably focused more on the shorter stuff and not put the mileage in that I need to do a good marathon. I am not planning another marathon until fall 2008 so hopefully that will give me the time to build the base that I am needing.
