I rank somewhere between the competitive recreational runner and the competitive highschool runner. Here's the scale:

10 - World record holder; 9 - Olympic Athlete; 8 - National elite; 7 - Professional runner; 6 - College All-american; 5 - College runner; 4 - Local elite; 3 - Competitive runner; 2 - Recreational runner; 1 - Jogger

It's a tough scale.

Short-Term Running Goals:

  • Run for fun and health, be fit in my 40s
  • Run a strong half marathon, under 1:25, good, under 1:20, great.

Long-Term Running Goals:

  • Be a disciplined runner, to be competitive in my age category, and feel strong while racing.
  •  Somehow actually put together a full year of running: increased discipline and decreased distraction and injuries
  • Be a 17/36 guy for 5K/10K (not realistic now)
  • Be a competitive Master's runner

Personal:

Spoken for, Christian, piano player, soli deo gloria, at least that's the ideal. Living for Triune God, beautiful wife, cute sons, self; hopefully in that order but Adam's nature and my own choices, not to mention worldly temptations like to play with the ideal.

Idealism, tempered by reality, with a healthy skepticism.

Gotta love this race, one of only 2 races in Salt Lake that serve coffee and hot chocolate afterwards, and also donuts. It also starts at a decent time for a winter race: 11:00. At the start I saw the regulars, Chris James and Dale, but then there was Alesandro, the new sponsored by Charlotte Running out-of-stater that jumped in and upset my chances.

We started off and Alex started slowly, but by the time we turned left he had caught front-runner Dale and was pulling away. I passed Dale going by the park and was biding my time until we hit the main road. As we cruised down the seemingly shorter every year main road I was catching Alex on the downhill, but mentally I let up on the turnaround and the uphill return. He put probably 10 seconds per mile on me in the race.

We hit the town again and some young kids that didn't do the whole race ran with me. I felt strong and like I was pushing it, but there was no 3rd place competition and I think I slacked off a little. I did sprint into home and high-fived Alex, he's a 3 year runner whose run 4 marathons, the fastest being 2:47 so I thought I had a chance, but 2nd is nice. My fastest time on this course, and I was glad that my right Achilles didn't flare. Cocoa and donuts at the end, an extra shirt and mini-boxing gloves for Phin signed by the Fullmer boxing bros. My dad walked Phin and I cooled down running back to them. Lunch at 1st Pres and another fun run in the books.
