Great time  volunteering as course monitor at Mile 16 of the Atlanta marathon.  I probably had the best section of the course, located in Piedmont Park with a view of Atlanta skyline.  Alex was with me and he had fun as well, we were also right by the basketball courts, so he got some practice in, as he made the 9th grade team last week.  2nd place Masters won $400with a 3:12, made me second guess my fall marathon choice! It his a hilly course, but I think I could have run a sub 3:10, as I did a 16 mile training tun on the same hills in March at a 3:05 pace, before I had established any type of mileage base.  Oh well, I dont run for money anyway, but sure would have been nice! lol

I'm guessing mile 16 is a good place to see some people really begin to fade in the race. How long did you have to stay at your post...for the really slow runners/walkers?

It was really fun watching the frontrunners come by ... As well as encouraging those struggling. Every so often in the 4+ hour runners, someone would come bouncing by with a smile on their face looking strong ... Obviously they were the ones running a smarter race! :) had to stay there until the sweep vehicle came by around 11, so it was about a 4 hr shift, but I really had no responsibilities other than to cheer and encourage ... I think I had to correct 3 runners who veered right where the course obviously turned right ... They were in a slightly delirious state! One gal flew by going right, there was no stopping her, but she clearly knew what she was doing ... Which I am guessing was shaving a couple miles off the course! It was later in the race, so she was not competing for an award .... And she sped up as she ran away from me! Lol

man I saw that prize money and I'm thinking it might have to be on my list for next year. I think there will be a lot of guys doing the same thing however...

I was thinking the same thing....then I remembered I'd just be one of those contributing to the prize money :-( Oh well, I can dream :-)

I briefly though about putting on my schedule for next year ... but yeah, I don't think it would be such easy pickings! My guess is the Top 3 Masters will go sub 3 ... and potentially by quite a bit! It is a hilly, tough course, and not too scenic in my opinion (at least for someone that lives here), so with one or two goal marathons a year for me ... it does not rank to high on my list!

I agree JG.
