Nice flat course on a beautiful fall day! Plan was to pace Alex to a pr of 19:30, was 19:55.  First 2 were 6:15, 6:25, he was 2steps ahead of me the whole way.  At Mile 2, my calf was feeling a little tight, so I told him to finish strong, I might not go with him.  He told me to toughen up! I stayed close, but let him go, the last thing I needed to do was find myself on the losing end of an all out sprint the last tenth.  I had told him last night we would race the last tenth, and he told me to 'bring it on!'

His pace slowed a little the last mile, but he looked over his shoulder a couple times to see how close I was.  I honestly believe that no matter how fast I would have run, he had no intentions of letting me pass him! He finished in 19:35, I was 10 seconds behind him, probably 5 at the 3 mile mark.  I refrained from a finishing kick, but he already had me beat.

I am proud of him, and actually am glad he just had a 20 second pr, the more times he gets a new pr will only motivate him to keep working harder, versus having an A+performance and having a let down in his next race.  Slow and steady is improvement is best.  His mind was mostly on his homecoming dance tonight anyway ... a much more exciting event!  Just being right behind him made him push a little harder ... the first of many times I will be chasing him I am sure!

I had a chat with the female masters winner after the race, he was listening pretty intently, she is also a trainer/running coach.  I think the conversation inspired him, because when we got in the car, he asked  me to put a training plan together for him for the winter to take him to the next level.  Good stuff, I hope he follows through with the commitment ... it will help us both improve if we are doing several key workouts a week together.

He ran great! Slow, steady improvements week after week are the way to go. You didn't do too shabby either :)

I love hearing about people really starting to get into the sport. It's inspiring to me.

Sounds like a great race all around! Good to see and like Andrea said, it is inspiring.

Awesome! I love seeing that kind of motivation, it's one of the reasons I love coaching. Smart move taking it easy on the calf.

That must feel great to have your son run like that and want to do what it takes to get better. Isn't he only 14? Most kids that age don't dedicate themselves like that to anything but video games. Nice running and congrats to your son.

Have a nice last taper week!

That is pretty cool! I would be so excited if my kids got into running and we could do it together!

Great motivation and father time... This is a lot of what it's all about. It reminds me of the movie Couragous. You and Alex need to go see the movie (it's showing in theatres now).

Thanks Andrea, Alex is inspiring to me ... so are you! Good luck in Philly!

Dan, it was a great race for Alex, and I was glad I was there chasing him! :)

HD, helping others improve def equals improving oneself ... and it is a lot easier! :)

Joe, yeah he turned 14 in July ... about when he started running. He has the same game addictions as most others, but his involvement in cross country & marching band as a freshman seem to be opening his eyes to other things ... let's hope that trend continues!

April, I could not have paid him to run a mile a year ago! Soccer is his first love, and I only convinced him to run cross country by telling him how much it would help his soccer fitness! He quickly learned to like it ... I guess some success is the main reason for that. I never would have guessed I would be chasing him in a 5k 3 months later!

IJR - Nothing beats quality father/son time ... we will check out that movie, thanks for the tip!

I am a litttle jealous. I'd love for my son to kick my butt in a 5k! Nice job by the way, sub 20 is nothing to be ashamed of for us old guys :)

nice seeing you guys again, JG. Good luck on your last taper week!

I'm jealous too... My son (16) is going in for a major knee surgery Wednsday. It's called Osteochondritis dissecans. It's where the cartilage tears away from the bone. Very serious situation, he'll be basiclly in a wheel chair for 6 weeks and physical therepy for several months...If things go well...! I'd like to be able to run with him any distance or any pace :-)

From JG on Mon, Oct 17, 2011 at 20:18:12 from 71.59.27.33

Trap - If I recall from a previous post of yours, your son is a big man, and could kick your butt, just not in a 5k! lol I fear the day that comes true!

Tim, great seeing you too ... since Alex is quickly getting faster than me, I hope you don't mind if I tell him to set his target on you. lol You are probably safe for a good while though!

IJR - so sorry to hear that, I hope the operation goes well & he has a speedy recovery ... will add him to my prayers

From timp on Tue, Oct 18, 2011 at 09:02:47 from 99.110.188.230

JG - if he keeps at it, he'll quickly be faster than both of us.
