Good bye September, Hello October!  Temperature at race start: 50 degrees - WooHoo!

September was by far my highest mileage month ever & the first time I broke 200 miles (224).  No taper for this race!

This weekend races conclude my ramped up mileage marathon training, taper starts Monday.

The goal for today (and my half marathon tomorrow) is simple, marathon pace miles at 6:50.

I spent the first 3 miles telling myself to slow down, but 6:30 pace felt very comfortable.

At the halfway point I knew I was on pace to PR & would, as I was not pushing hard.

I decided to just hold pace, and then kicked it up a notch the last 1.2, but still not to an all out race effort.  I took a minute off my PR & easily would have broken 40, if I had pushed harder.  Very pleased with my effort/time, tomorrow I won't get carried away ... 6:50 pace is the target ... and there will be some big hills that will test me on that.

Anyway, today was a big boost to my confidence, and confirmed 'Trust your Training'

Oh, how I wish I were racing St. George today, hope all fared well that did!!

Split Time Distance Avg Pace
1 6:29 1 6:29
2 6:30 1 6:30
3 6:24 1 6:24
4 6:36 1 6:36
5 6:24 1 6:24
6 6:18 1 6:18
7 1:57 0.38 5:07
 Summary 40:37 6.38

6:22

I am not sure why I am not getting accurate splits on my Garmin, it used to almost always be right on.  Alot of this course was on pathways, and there really were not too many tangents to run, and I thought I was running them well.  Timp from the blog also ran today, and his Garmin read 6.24, which is about what I expect in a 10k.  When it gets off as far as it was in my last 2 races, you really can't use the 'Avg. pace' as a guide ... as the watch said I was running a 6:22 pace,  but my actual 10k pace was 6:33 - that is a huge difference!

Ran 2 easy cool down miles with Tim, before awards, where I got a ATC travel mug ... which is actually not a bad deal because the race was free to members!

DAAAANG! Congratulations!!! What a race/ what a time! Great job! Hello October...loving this weather....hating I still can't run, but glad you are enjoying!

The PR has got to feel GREAT! You are going to be on such a high all day! YAY!

From Andrea on Sat, Oct 01, 2011 at 16:23:39 from 67.177.21.60

This race should definitely boost your confidence! PR on no taper! Believing in your training is SO important - it can take you very far.

Nice race man!! Double sweet with a PR and marathon taper upcoming. Impressive.

From timp on Sat, Oct 01, 2011 at 17:48:54 from 99.110.188.230

really nice job today!! Congrats on the PR and the AG win! It sure was a pretty morning - a perfect day for a race.

Good luck tomorrow. I wouldn't be afraid to let the reins out a little bit, like today, and let yourself see what can happen.

Thanks to all of you!!!

Steam, I can' wait to celebrate in Boston with you, you'll be back at it soon!

Andrea, it was a huge boost! Forget the miles, September included a lot of hard workouts, and it sure is nice to be rewarded for that!

Dan, I was surprised, the thought of potentially running a PR never even entered my mind until about 2.5 miles. That was not the plan today!

Tim, Yes we were blessed with perfect running weather this weekend! You did awesome. Maybe I will try to hit my 6:50 pace the first 6.9 mile, and then set a goal for my final 10k pace based on how I feel.

Allie, Let's hope so, I think I am starting to get a little anxious!

I saw the splits first and figured you had just decided to race it, but wow, you are really in a good spot if you were holding back. Very impressive, it should be a sweet marathon coming up!

FWIW, my garmin is always measuring different than everyone else's too...very frusturating!

From seeaprilrun on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 00:49:56 from 199.36.244.11

Awesome! 6:30 pace feeling easy is a great, great sign! Way to PR--and you weren't even racing!

From flatlander on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 17:47:00 from 75.220.242.19

This is a very good sign, very impressive pace. Probably better that you have to wait another year to run St. George. It was a lot hotter than Atlanta on Saturday. I think one problem with Garmin splits is that almost all courses are long, just for "good measure". If it was a Garmin problem then it would measure some courses short, and mine never does.

Nice, PR with the cool to take it easy. Training sure does help.

From I Just Run on Mon, Oct 03, 2011 at 10:55:26 from 67.79.11.242

Nice running JG. It is obvious that your training methods are really paying off! I can't wait to see how your marathon goes in a few weeks. It's sure impressive how you seem to run with comfort and still continue to break all of your PR's... Keep running you're an inspiration!

From JG on Mon, Oct 03, 2011 at 12:05:12 from 71.59.27.33

Thx SJ, I feel good about where I am ... although my body is really begging taper, so I am glad that time has arrived. If my body responds to the rest like it usually does, I am excited to see what I can do on 10/22!

Thanks April, now all I have to do is run strong for 26.2 like you did, and maybe I will join you in the sub 3 club!

Flat, we were blessed with perfect running weather in GA this weekend, that helped! Tough break on the St. George heat, but you handled it like a true Texan! :)

Matt - thx, if I can run half as strong race as you just did, I will be a happy camper after my marathon!

IJR - Everyone on here is an inspiration, I can honestly say I would not be anywhere near where I am now, if it were not for this blog!

Todays weather ... low of 45 ... high of 73 ... I feel like I died & went to heaven! :)

From Dave S on Mon, Oct 03, 2011 at 12:14:45 from 4.254.223.108

Nice job on the PR! That's a great time for a non tapered tuneup race. It's looking good for the marathon.
