Personal:

I used to run competitively, and maybe I will do so again someday.  Right now I am primarily running to try and get in better shape, and to maintain both physical and emotional health, but also for the simple joy that comes when I run.

I am also the proud daddy of five little ones.  I love the opportunity that I have to be a daddy, and my challenge is to balance my family responsibilities with work and running.

The plan for today was to go out to the lake, and then run the 5 mile tempo in the middle of the run on the way back, finishing with a mile around the block by my house.  Everything went as planned for the first while, but I ran a little faster than planned.  33:21 for the first 5 miles.  After 5 miles I sped up, running 5:45 pace for about 2 miles before slowing to 5:50 pace for another 3.85 miles to get me to 10.85 miles in 1:07:18 (14:35 for the last 2.5 of this).  I then began the 5 mile tempo, and I sped up, hitting a half mile in 2:51, followed by miles in 5:40, 5:36,(14:07 for 2.5) 5:32, 5:34, and then closing with a half mile in 2:46 (13:52 for the last 2.5 and 27:59 for 5 miles, with the last 7.5 being done in 42:34).  At this point I was at 15.85 miles (1:35:17).  The original plan was to maintain no slower than 6:00 pace from here to my house, including running up state street (monster hill).  However I did not feel well, as it was warmer than I am accustomed to and I had not eaten anything since the previous evening.  So, I slowed down.  Things seemed to be ok, until I was about 2 miles from home, and my vision started to get really blurry and I started feeling like absolute garbage.  Finally, as I was running up state street I decided that I had to stop, as I could tell that I was seriously dehydrated, and out of fuel.  I did, and I found a little stream and got a drink, waited a few minutes, and then finished running home at around 10:00 pace.  Total time of 2:02:22 for 19.35 miles.
