No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

This race started at O'dark-thirty (or 5am..in Idaho, in MAY!).  Got up early and ate a peanut butter bagel and coffee.  Got to the start at around 4:30 and ran about 1.3 mile warmup and used the facilities. This was going to be a training run for me...and I am glad that is all it was as things did not go according to my plan.

From the start, my stomach was not good...either the bagel or yesterdays meals which were not unusual but my stomach was churning from the gun.  Got lost in the pitch black at the first turn and ran a little extra but got back on track.

This course is constant rollers from start to finish and for the first 15 miles we ran almost the whole way into a 15-20mph headwind which really sucked.  Hit the half at 1:25ish which was on plan.  I wanted to speed up to MP for the rest of the run and hit somewhere around a 2:45.  However, the stomach issues were catching up.   I ran the whole race only taking one gel and getting water/powerade at only 5 stops...my stomach would not take anything!   Then several firsts for me at a marathon...at mile 17 had to stop to use the PoP which took a while.  Started feeling a little better but that was short lived and my intestinal issues only got worse.  Then at mile 24 (or so), I final stopped and hurled about 4 times...all the hydration from the day gone.  I felt better but now had no fuel left so I just coasted in the rest of the way.

I finished in 2:55:14 and had a good time talking to folks at the end waiting for others to finish (Gray, Lynette, McKay) the half and other marathoners (there were only about 25-30 of us).  Second place came in at 3:35.  I had to leave to get my kids and help with a garage sale afterwards and now am getting ready to clean the garage on this beautiful day.

Not happy with the result, but realize it is what it is...a training run. Now to figure out the stomach issues before UVM!

Sorry about the stomach problems.

Any chance, since you were viewing this as a training run, that you just weren't paying attention to your diet the way you normally would?

Still, you will get a lot of benefit from this run.

Ugh! Stomach issues are the worst. I'm sorry that you had to deal with that. One of the challenges of marathons is that 26.2 miles is a long time for something to go wrong and we all just have to hope that everything goes perfect for the whole race! Good Job though, you still killed it!!!!

Dang Jeff ... that does not sound fun!!! I don't know why, but whenever someone pukes at a race I have to look! I tell myself not to, because it makes me want to puke myself, but I cannot help it!!!

Hoping your garage is now spic and span and are now enjoying some sort of R & R. :)

Yikes! I was right there with you on the stomach issues today. Good thing I was only running a Half or else I might STILL be on the course in the POP. :) All the same, its kinda cool that you were able to sit in the POP and read the newspaper, stop and chat, sign some autographs and still win by 40 mins. LOL. See ya in Provo in 4 weeks.

nice job today -- great training run as you prep for UVM. sorry about the stomach issues. that's definitely not a pleasant experience, especially while running a marathon, but you stuck it out. way to go!

Sorry about the GI issues. It is kind of disheartening that even experienced runners who watch their diet with attention experience these kind of problems once in a while. I guess it's all part of the game then. Anyway, congratulations on holding on until the end for a win!

From Adam RW on Sat, May 14, 2011 at 22:49:19 from 24.10.132.131

Jeff, I have to say all things considered, AWESOME! Wind, no nutrients during the race, stubborn stomach, etc. To win a marathon on a training run is great!

From Mauri on Sat, May 14, 2011 at 22:51:37 from 174.27.127.175

Sounds like my S.D. Marathon a year ago. Not fun. I'm still trying to figure out my GI issues. You did great tho! You were looking good when we saw you. You are an amazing runner!

If we take these problems and tie your shoelaces together then I might be able to catch you. But probably not. Nice job on the win. Chalk it up. Maybe dip your bagel in pepto in the morning. I really hope you're able to figure this out before UVM.

What matters is you finish with the issues you had. That's a God Blessing. Great job. Maybe you can trace back what caused the stomach issue. I have no doubt you'll be ready for Utah.

Ouch! Just reading your post made me have to go potty. Sucks your stomach was so jacked. Solid training run nonetheless. See ya in a few weeks.

Quite an unfortunate day for you Jeff, but still running 2:55 on a training day - that's got to be good for you in the long run....not to mention frustrating to those of us yet to go sub 3 hours :)
