Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep on running, enjoy it for the sake of running, relax and enjoy life...de-stress.  Stay fit as I enter retirement in  2025.

No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

Quick synopsis, more to come.  (See entries from previous couple of days for background).

Overall I was 185 (173 male, 18th in 40-44, 20th Master).

Got to ride VIP buses to the Athlete Village...12 buses with police escort which shutdown the entire freeway for our caravan to the start!  Met Josh and the PowerBar crew and Runnersworld video guys.  Video at: http://www.runnersworld.com/cda/microsite/video/0,8034,s6-239-506-64,00.html?bcpid=1439819617&bclid=1463300967&bctid=20319661001

Ran very well in the first half being paced by Josh Cox to a 1:16:10 half.  Josh did an awesome job breaking the wind (very windy today) for me.

Peter Reid started running with us at 12M, Josh dropped off at half.  Started to slow up a bit due to wind and hills.  Peter was working hard but was having a harder time with the wind and pace (to his credit he has been retired for 3 years!).   At 17M at the GelZone, I pass Peter and don't see him again until the finish (he was about 2.5 minutes behind me).

Newton Hills plus wind = suck.  Heartbreak was tough and slow, and the last 5M were not my best.

Splits:

1 - 5:34  - Wow, way too fast (Josh wanted to run with Ryan!)

2 - 5:43 - Feeling good and running pretty easy.  Everyone is recognizing Josh and he keeps telling everyone he is "pacing his buddy!"...what a great guy.

3 - 5:37 - Josh steps in front and breaks the wind starting about here.  Keeps great tabs on me.  Still feeling good but running fast!

4 - 5:34 - Wow, too fast!

5 - 5:47 - Still fast but not bad.  First PowerBar Gel about here.

6 - 5:36 - Pretty much on track, just tracking Josh and running in his jet stream!

7 - 5:41

8 - 5:55 - Right on track!  Feeling good.

9 - 5:51

10 - 5:51 - Second gel and feeling good, still tucked in behind Josh.  Don't feel like I am working too hard

11 - 5:56

12 - 5:51 - Peter Reid joins us as we head towards Wellesley and the scream tunnel (very loudly for Josh!)

13 - 6:01  - Josh drops off and Peter and I head out for the second half.

14 - 5:54 - Third PowerBar Gel past the HM mark (1:16:10ish, goal was 1:16:55 with a 1:18 second half).  HM split is 3rd fastest HM time behind Poky last year (1:15:36) and the 2nd half of St. George 2007 (1:13:30ish)...pretty good!

15 - 6:13 - An easy breather mile...ask Peter to pick it up as he is breaking the wind that is getting stronger.

16 - 5:47 - Not bad, but legs starting to get heavy.

17 - 6:18 - First slower mile, legs feeling it.  Hit the GelZone, get some gels and lose Peter on the hills but just keep charging on.

18 - 6:18  - Ok, legs really starting to feel it, trying to maintain my energy.

19 - 6:17 - Ouch, bad mile energy and time wise.  Starting to weaken.

20 - 6:35 - Yikes, starting to see the goal really slip away here, especially when Ken Pliska powers by me!

21 - 7:02 - Heartbreak hill...not good for me this year.  Had to stop and walk for about 5 seconds to stave off a cramp.  Last PowerBar Gel over the hill.

22 - 6:09 - OK, better on the down hill.

23 - 6:21 - Start of the death march to the finish.  Just giving what I have left.

24 - 6:31 - Are we there yet?!?!

25 - 6:33 - See Citgo sign, nearly there...trying to push, nothing left.

26 - 6:44 - Just shoot me already!

0.2 - 6:24 pace - What a kick in front of thousands of people...not!

Overall mostly happy with the result, but estactic with the whole experience for myself, my family and friends.  Andrea, McKay and Lynette did awesome!    Lesson learned:  more long tempo runs, long Progression runs to MP at end.

Went to the PowerBar after race party with our friends (stayed for bit then they left to get dinner) and Kami and I partied with the crew (Chad, Dave, Drew, Natalie, Jacqueline, Mike) and Peter Reid and his wife (Malika Ulmi).  Josh was unable to show up, but we did meet his wife when she arrived (a physicist and gorgeous!).  Have a great time, drink too much Guiness!  Kami is having a great time with everyone as well...what a finish to the day!

Strong performance, Jeff. I wondered if Josh ran Boston. I should solicite him to join the blog.

Jeff, Great Job in Boston. I saw you on that video clip with Josh Cox......WAY AWESOME!!!

From Michelle N. on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 11:37:00 from 75.162.252.159

Way to go! So awesome. I think being back where I was, I didn't mind the wind as much because we had 12000 people to break it in front:) The last few miles I difinitely noticed it more though.

Bill, is that on YouTube? Send me the link.

Great job and strong performance. It sounded like a tough day and being closer to the front I'm sure that wind had a bigger effect. Sounds like you had a great experience hanging out with the elites and enjoying some family time.

From Burt on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 11:54:34 from 68.76.197.194

Thanks. I guess I can't watch it at work with Big Brother watching over me so I'll have to wait 'til tonight and watch it at home.

From Robert on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 11:57:46 from 206.195.193.254

Great work Jeff! Also great talking to you afterwards. I was feeling much better at that point vs. the very end (colder than a well diggers arse). It's hard to come down from the high of running in that race. I think we'll cross paths again sometime.

From air darkhorse on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 11:58:54 from 98.97.238.102

Jeff, Awesome! And you got press coverage too. Sounds like you had fun too.

From cody draper on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 12:03:24 from 69.9.58.17

Awesome race and what a memorable experience! Its going to be hard for you to top that race!

From Andy on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 12:09:51 from 199.190.170.24

Great race and it sounds like an amazing experience. It helps to have old guys like you doing incredible things so I can't make any excuses for not continuing to improve.

From Jon on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 12:29:07 from 138.64.2.76

We've been looking forward to the race report. Sounds like you ran well and got your top 20 master's goal- very impressive. Heck, you only had 1 mile slower than 6:44, so really didn't drop off much. And as for the whole PowerBar/VIP thing- that is awesome. I kept wondering how you won that- I figured they chose the nicest, most upstanding guy in the race... plus I wouldn't put it past you to be so humble that you wouldn't even mention it on the FRB ahead of time. I bet the PowerBar guys were excited to be pacing someone who could actually run fast, too! Congrats all around.

From Lucia on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 12:39:28 from 74.9.147.114

Finally your report! Nice job out there, congratulations Jeff! Was this your best time running Boston?

From Dustin on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 12:39:33 from 204.113.48.69

Congrats on a great race and what an awesome experience to be able to run with such talented guys. I get so excited reading about everyone's experience in Boston, can't wait to go out again, hopefully next year.

From jtshad on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 13:00:57 from 204.134.132.225

Thanks everyone, it was a great time and a great memory with all the "extras" that took place.

Lucia, yes this was 9 minutes faster than 3 years ago.

It was actually EXACTLY the same time I had at WDW in January!

From superfly on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 13:41:33 from 209.33.210.52

You are kidding me that Josh Cox was one of your pacers... WOW! What a once in a lifetime event. Your the man over and over again. Way to go Jeff and keep kicking butts all over the map. Way to be top 20 in masters and get your goal!

From paul on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 13:44:41 from 65.103.252.214

Great job Jeff, that sounded sooo fun. Really cool you got to run with Josh Cox, I've always admired him.

Well done Jeff. Congrats

From Neil on Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 17:43:49 from 164.165.24.5

What an experience! I don't think it gets better than that unless you win the dang thing and they let you throw out the first pitch at Fenway or something. ;) Congrats!

Awesome job! Can't believe your pace the first several miles! All done with only 6 hours of sleep average and a full time job and family! I'm new to the road racing world--who is Josh Cox? Sounds like a pretty famous fast guy!

From Burt on Sat, Apr 25, 2009 at 14:36:15 from 98.167.151.26

Mary Ann! He's only the American record holder in the 50k. JK. I didn't know who he was 'til a year ago.

From Bec on Sat, Apr 25, 2009 at 23:33:40 from 67.177.35.60

From Smooth on Sun, Apr 26, 2009 at 11:39:07 from 71.36.71.239

WOW!!! Very impressive performance! CONGRATS on an AWESOME race and the Master placement!

From jtshad on Mon, Apr 27, 2009 at 10:10:54 from 204.134.132.225

Thanks everyone, it was one that I will remember for a long while.

Josh Cox is a 2:13 marathoner and ran the 50K in 2:47 in January. Peter Reid is an amazing athlete...winning Kona Ironman 3 times is amazing. Very cool to run with and meet these types of athletes!

From James W on Mon, Apr 27, 2009 at 12:25:15 from 12.151.72.1

Just to add my 2 cents to everyone else, congrats on a great race, Jeff! I had to watch the video from home, but it was very cool, I probably would have had a cheesy grin too if I had been in your place . . .
