Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

 I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

7M early this moring.  A slight progression run, ranging from 7:51 pace to a 6:50 pace for the last 2 miles.  Left hammy STILL tight (maybe a little bit from the bike ride yesterday).  Supposed to be a great day today, so I will get in a tempo run at lunch.

total time: 50:14  (Saucony Stratos - 283 miles)

7M MP run at lunch today on a beautiful day...sunny and 60 degrees.  The pace (6:15 avg) felt pretty good and it was not too hard on the hamstring.  Nice progression run:  1-6:27; 2-6:18, 3-6:11, 4-6:02, 5-5:59, 6-6:15, 7-6:32 (cooldown started at about 6.5M mark).  Gave me a little confidence that the speed is still there for Ogden.  I will get a couple more up tempo runs in before the race.

total time: 43:43  (Saucony T2 - 426 miles)

Nice running Jeff the training is going well. We might be having some decent weather now it's great. It will be great seeing you in Ogden.

Stretch that hammy out well, you may even do it after running about a mile and then just drop down and touch your toes for 30 seconds. I got this advice from a physical therapist a couple years ago. It really works.

You haven't lost any speed in fact with the break from speed I think it will be to your advantage with building some aerobic miles instead. Your going to be flying in Ogden, I'll probably see your back side the whole time.

Thanks for the suggestions nice words Kory! I am hoping that I can make Ogden a breakout race and hit a 2:35 or better, but would be happy with anything sub 2:40. I look forward to seeing you run strong in Ogden as well.

BTW, I am running the WBR, did you sign up as well?

From Dan S on Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 16:07:47

Nice speed! I was going to put in 6 minute miles today too, but I forgot the GPS (oh yea - and the jet pack). keep up the fine pace.

I did but that means I won't run the Teton Dam Marathon. I think trying to do both would be too much, and too much time away.

From jtshad on Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 16:20:33

I am not sure if I am running TDM either now that I committed to WBR.

From wheakory on Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 18:26:26

Jeff - With all the hills in Teton... I thought I just won't be recovered enough and turn around and run the next week. This relay legs are harder than Arizona's. I thought it would be a high risk chance of getting an injury doing both. I'm not invincible anymore.

Jeff,

Your goal of sub 2:40 at Ogden should defintely be in your reach. Am I correct in assuming that this last year has been a breakout year in terms of PRs and higher mileage? If so, there should be no reason you couldn't shave a few minutes off last year's time. Do you have any long runs planned between now and then, or mostly just tempo and MP work?

John

John, yes last year was a great PR year with 2 new PR's that fairly significantly lower from the year before (from a 2:46 at Poky 06 to 2:41 at Ogden 07 to 2:32 at St. George 07). My mileage went up over 600 miles from the previous year (and I should get a new mileage high this year).

have done a 20 miler and a 15 miler in the past couple of weeks (plus 18 miles total last Wed), so I will likely get a 10 mile hill workout in this weekend (both up and down), a couple more MP and tempo runs and the rest recovery/easy before the race on May 17.
