Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

4M very easy early before heading to work on a still warmer day but windy.  Supposed to get into the low 30's by tonight and by the weekend our lows are in the 20's, highs only mid-30's!  We were planning on camping this weekend, but not looking to likely now.

Stratos 2 - 241 miles

Kory, this story is for you!  My son's soccer game was tonight and I ended up refereeing the whole game (no ref, other coach did not have whistle/stopwatch and I have a cold that I didn't want to pass along) with no issues.  The team has really developed this year and play solid ball and have learned a great deal on how to run the offense (spreading out, passing, crossing, positioning, communication).  The team we played had some good kids but tended to bunch up and not work together so my guys were winning (3-0 final score, which could have been higher but for shots on goal off the mark).  Once we got up 3-0 in the last quarter, I asked my boys to stop trying to shoot and practice passing.  This is where the story starts to get bad.

I have one boy who is good, but awfully full of himself, is a ball hog and is very emotional on the field (even in practice he gets mad at his teammates if they don't get him the ball!).  I had called back a goal he scored earlier because he kicked the ball out of the goalies hand (a no-no in AYSO).  So, the boys were playing and this particular player and one from the other team were battling for the ball, the other player goes down and the ball is underneath him and as he is trying to get up, my player steps over him and nearly steps ON him to kick the ball.  In the interest of the kid's safety, I call a halt to play and awarded a free kick to the other team (remember we are up 3- with 2 minutes left!).  My playere throws a tantrum and kicks the ball directly at a player on the other team and stomps off.  I stop him, indicate that is not good sportsmanship and ask him to apologize which he did reluctantly.

Then, after the game, my player didn't even want to shake hands.  As I was leaving the field after shaking hands with the other coach, this players father acosts me and demands to know why I made his son apologize then in a fit of frustration continues to degrade me for my  refereeing, coaching, manlihood, etc.  He is red faced and is looking like he is going to explode.  I calmy explain why I did what I did and walk away.  He then indicates "they are done with me" for the last game and calls me more names.  I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.  This is now the third incident this fall at soccer games...I am done coaching AYSO for a while!

Oh, I am claiming 1M easy running during the refereeing of the game (while my cold is turning into a sinus infection and my head feels like it is going to explode!).

Nice run. Way to get back into the training or should I say recovery.

Weather is going to be nasty this weekend. I have to be in Idaho Falls by 9am for my daughter's Junior High Soccer Tournament at the complex by Old Butte Road. I'm not looking forward to that with the way their predicting the weather this weekend.

Jeff, since you ran the P.F. Chang Rock 'n' Roll Marathon what would you do better in training to prepare for this course?

From jtshad on Thu, Oct 09, 2008 at 09:57:05

Winter training is hard to get really good quality runs in. But, I think your training approach this year is fine. This is a flat course so you don't get the benefit of running hills (always using the same muscles the same way). It is a fair course, I just didn't have it in me last year do to inadequate fueling before the race and being sick and doing no running 2 weeks before the race.

I grew up in Little League. Used to volunteer my time to umpire/ref. Finally decided it wasn't a productive use of my free time (the parents are far worse than the kids). You know it's an unhealthy use of time when you find a little voice in your head urging you to punch somebody. Some folks have that gift of patience...I'm still working on it. Sounds like you handled yourself well.

So you have a cold, too, huh?

Ah, youth sports. It is amazing to me how worked up some parents get. Sad. It even embarrasses the kids, a lot of the time, and sets a horrible example. Very sad reflection on our society and priorities.

From wheakory on Thu, Oct 09, 2008 at 11:25:50

Jeff - I feel for you in that story. You handled it in a professional manner. You're well respected for what you were trying to teach the player. I guess we know where the player gets his attitude from

You did the right thing. Player's need to learn to respect the game and play with discipline and not chaos. I've seen bad calls happen to my daughter this year, but I've never said anything this year. I've changed my attitude and don't want my daughter seeing me act like a complete jerk, and embarrass her.

The referee's we have to remember as parent's can only see so much, and sometimes has to make judgement calls to the best of their knowledge and ability. Great job Jeff.

I'll be up in IF this weekend at 9am at a soccer tournament and I hope our parents don't get out of hand like they did in one of our earlier games this year.

I hope you get over that nasty cold, and can start training again. I'm not sure what marathon I want to do next. Right now I'm disappointed in SGM and just need to figure out whats a good plan. The weather really made a mess for both of us.

From Robert on Thu, Oct 09, 2008 at 14:26:40

You handled the situation just like I would. If parents are going to teach respect for authority, then I do. Sounds like that dad could use a good 20 mile run!!

From Dale on Thu, Oct 09, 2008 at 16:00:41

Name-calling is pretty childish from an adult...but there's plenty of adults out there guilty of it sorry to say.

Other than that part of it, I wonder whether the parent got mad about what he *saw* or about what his kid *told* him. Too many parents take what there kids tell them at face value without bothering to get the other side of the story. I'm surprised a parent with that little self-control waited until after the game to throw their fit....usually they can't restrain themselves more than about 2 seconds. Makes me think in this case perhaps the kid told his dad what happened from his perspective, obviously skewed, and the parent didn't bother to engage their brain to think if things *really* happened that way or was there perhaps another side to the story (yours). Too many people automatically take what their children tell them and don't look at it from the other perspective. Kids can have selective memories and omit key facts (Dad, the ref penalized me for kicking a goal! No, I didn't hurt the goalie, I had plenty of room!).

Too many parent's leap to their kids defense without evaluating the situation first.

Of course, the parent could just be a jerk too...Either way, you made a good call (if it *really* happened that way :)...jk!).
