Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep on running, enjoy it for the sake of running, relax and enjoy life...de-stress.  Stay fit as I enter retirement in < 4years.

No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

 I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

what is your take on that article, Jeff? Allie?

From Calvin on Thu, Jul 08, 2010 at 13:38:46 from 66.133.117.3

Out of the 27 marathons that i've run, i'm really only pleased with how i ran in less than 10 of them. (i.e. ran a strong race, or felt like i was near my potential)

Once i achieve that 'perfect' marathon for me, i will likely scale back to shorter races.

Interesting article. I've thought long and hard about this topic and have had the thought many times to bag the marathons and stick with halfs or shorter as it seems like all the bad things that happen to me with running occur either while running marathons or towards the end of the marathon training cycle.

At the moment I'm like you Cal and still would like to have at least one good marathon performance that I felt was if not perfect at least 'close' to perfect.

But from the tone of the article it would seem unless you're running over 70+ MPW it's going to be tough to run marathons to potential.

For now I think I'm content to race just 1 marathon every 1 or 2 years and stick with shorter stuff otherwise, except for maybe pacing my wife in her marathons (as long as she doesn't get too fast!)

And I still want to do that 50-miler when I'm 50!

Geez, thanks a lot, now I have to rethink everything :)

That was very interesting, last year I told myself that I wanted to train for 1/2 marathons cause I thought it was a better distance for me but got caught up in the "hoopla" and thinking that it was pointless to train for 6 months for anything less than a Marathon. I'm with the other people posting here though, I would really like to have a really good solid marathon performance. I'm getting old and don't have 2 years in between races.

Hi Jeff, I hope Yellowstone is treating you well. Really good article. Turns out EVERY time in my life I have trained over 80mpw I get hurt. Maybe there is something to be said about too much volume and focusing on the marathon. I think the speedwork that I often caught out first to keep my body going all those extra miles is doing something to keep me together...

Good article. Definitely true that people just assume you should run the longest event you can. It seems lots of people should do half marathons rather than marathons, but everyone wants the "glory" event. I enjoyed reading that.
