"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

No run today. A real short and easy run tomorrow.

I've run 3 marathons in my life. I was 31 yrs. old when I ran my first. My time was 4:23 - ish. My second was four years after that and my time was 4:21 - ish. My third was four years after that. I developed an injury in my foot and by mile 18 I was sitting on the side of the road waiting for the medical van to pick me up. It never came so I walk/jogged to the finish in 5:18 - ish. That was six years ago. My training for all 3 marathons consisted of very little training. I ran at most 4 days a week. I think I once ran a fifty-five mile week. I did manage to run at least one twenty miler a month before each marathon. But really, what was I thinking? So this time I've trained much differently than before. I'm 14 years older than I was when I ran my first marathon. Should be interesting to see what happens the day after tomorrow.

PM edit: So I'm mostly packed. Trying to prepare for all contingencies. I anticipate it being rather chilly up Blacksmith Fork Canyon before the marathon, with maybe some wind. So I want to bundle up well, then strip down right before the start because it will probably nice and toasty by the time I'm halfway through. Better to be under dressed than overdressed while on the run IMO. I'm charging my garmin and making pancakes for dinner. Why am I blogging about this? Just nerves I guess.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Sep 17, 2009 at 14:33:47 from 198.241.174.15

You are going to have a much different experience than you did in the fast.

Rest up well!

JD, im excited to hear about it. I wanted to come up and watch you come across the finish, but there is a man in my neighborhood who is dying of LouGehrigs disease and their is a 5k in Holladay to raise money for the disease. Some people in my hood are doing it to honor him. Im going to try and do it if im feeling better. You are going to be amazing, you've worked your butt off to get here.

Oh, man, I wish I could see your marathon! I think you are going to do awesome. Your mileage and consistency are really amazing. Have a peaceful rest day, eat really, really well, hydrate, and have a great race on Saturday!

From auntieem on Thu, Sep 17, 2009 at 16:43:30 from 67.182.145.8

JD! I want to be like you - all calm and zen and introspective. You can have some of my speed if you really think it will do you any good - ha!, trade me for some zen attitude!

From JD on Thu, Sep 17, 2009 at 18:01:33 from 209.183.51.44

Allie - thanks. You're going to have a great marathon, I can feel it. :-)

Nevels - if by "in the bag", you mean a bag full of cement which has sunk to the bottom of a lake and which I must retrieve, haul up to the surface, untie, and bring the PR out into the light of day, then yes, I agree, a PR is in the bag.

Carolyn - I think you're right. It should be a whole new thing to run a marathon with some actual training under my belt.

Thanks Lysa. I hope you feel well enough to participate in the 5k. Sounds like a good cause.

Auntieem - thanks. You can have all the Zen your heart desires, if you don't look for it...:-)

I ditto everyone else. you will do great with your training! I am looking forward to hearing all about it. I wish I could come and watch. Why can't Logan just be around the corner???

From redrooster on Thu, Sep 17, 2009 at 19:15:24 from 129.123.3.31

JD, I will look for you at the copper mill tomorrow, I will be there around 5ish if you are there. I am the tall goofy looking red head with a short hair cut and glasses.

I am planning to run Cody in to the finish, but if I have enough energy I will come back and look for you. And if I miss Cody somehow I will wait for you. I have your bib number. Rest up and see you soon, Scott

From JD on Thu, Sep 17, 2009 at 19:52:01 from 32.176.174.195

Thanks Kelli - if Logan moves closer between now and Saturday, I'll let you know.:-)

Thanks Scott - what a coincidence, I'm a tall goofy looking guy too, with glasses, but with short dark hair and a hairy face. I'll look for you.

Good luck at TOU, go get that PR!

I had no idea that you had so many marathons under your belt but spread out so far. Great job on that 3rd one btw--I mean if you can still finish and injured and now you have actual training and you can run 6 minute miles I mean you will be done in like an hour....LOL

oh and I have to laugh at, "Why am I blogging about this" I do that sometimes...I start rambling on just to see if someone is paying attention to me...gets tiresome just talking to the dogs all day HAHAHAHA

Good luck! and I can't wait to read your report!
