Running Accomplishments:

'Just started! -Again!

Short-Term Running Goals:

Increase my energy levels so that I can keep up with my demanding jobs (Mother of Five, Wife of Father of Five, Chef, Housekeeper, Uncertified Phone Counselor, to name a few:). Strengthen my heart and improve my circulation. Grow some muscles! (It's about time!) Run four miles at once... sometime in the next 2 yrs, anyway. :)

Long-Term Running Goals:

I'd like to still have the strength and energy to do things when I'm old. I'd also like to stay in one peice until then!

Personal:

I have been married almost 9 years to Practically-Perfect Jeremy. We have five dear children 7yo and under. I rollerbladed as a teenager. For 18 mo, I walked a few times a week until about a year ago. I tried running w/ wonderful running partner last year, but that tapered off. We had a hard time matching schedules and I wasn't committed enough to do it alone. After an inspiring meeting with Sasha and Sarah, I am recommitted to regular exercise. I may run, or I may fast-walk. The point is to get MOVING, again. Please bear with my pitiful mileage. Supermommy runs all day, and doing that properly is my #1 priority.

Lybi and I ran around my neighborhood after my children went to bed. It wasn't too awful hot. We tried to recruit my walking buddy, too, but (knowing we'd be coming) she just HAPPENNED to have all her lights out by 8:40pm... hm...

As Lybi said, I ran a mile for the first time. Ever. That was exciting. I would have celebrated more if I hadn't been so winded.:) When it was time for me to run the mile when I was in school as a child, well, it wasn't pretty. hehe I was awesome at tag and short races, but when my side started hurting, I would stop. 'Anyone know what that sharp pain in the side means/is?

Welcome to the blog! And congrats on your achievement. You will definitely find your energy levels increasing as you continue to run. I have seen this happen to me. When I started running again this past January, I could only run a couple miles, and it would get me winded. Be patient, and keep at it, and your body will reward you.

Thanks for the encouragement! :)

Thank you for YOUR encouragement to me. I think your goals are perfect and that you will meet them. The tricky thing with running is to BELIEVE in it. I am not a runner by trade...I was raised on cracker jacks and Sesame Street. Like Sasha likes to say, "Kenyans run, Russians play chess and Americans watch T.V." Sad...but too true. I am sure that if you keep it up that you eventually will be amazed at your increased strength. I'm sure that your muscles aren't as bad off as you think as I'm sure you are a fairly involved mommy who plays ring around the rosie occasionally.

Well..I think you are amazing for breaking out of your comfort zone and starting to run. I look forward to getting to know you better...I'm sure you are wonderful if you are friends with Lybi and mother to the sweet family you have there. Now I'm going to wish I was neighbors with you too. (Lybi and I are always counting the benefits of living next door to each other)

Yeah, no kidding. I've been looking at real estate in Holly's cul de sac.

I'm also thinking that if you Pachevs come down again, we girls should all go for a run together.

From Holly on Sat, Aug 11, 2007 at 13:46:28

You two are so sweet. :)

Sarah! I can't tell you how excited I was to hear from you directly! You are INFAMOUS here. hehe let's talk more!

I definitely need to develop some faith in running.

Oh, running after children keeps me generally in shape, but the whiter the legs, the harder it is to tell! lol

Thanks for the pat on the back about "breaking out." It's all Lybi's fault, though. :)

HOW shall we all live in one spot...hmmm. You know, Sarah, there are many more days that are good enough weather to run here in Mesa... :)

The side pain can come from many sources - bad diet, liver problems, weak abdominal muscles, eating dry foods and not drinking enough, trying to run after a heavy cholesterol-loaded meal, or running very anaerobically. Do not let it stop you, though. Eliminate the culprits one at a time. A natural response to pain is to stop running. The proper response is to eliminate the root cause of pain, which is usually life-style related.

From Holly on Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 20:50:47

Thank you for responding to my question about side pain! I was afraid no one would answer that.

Let me think... I had that pain often as a child when I ran really hard on the playground and outside. I was healthy as a child and my mom made healthy food, too, so I don't THINK it's diet-related (except possibly not enough water), or liver or weak abs (not abs then, anyway:P).

I have only noticed that feeling twice running with Lybi: the second day when she let me set the (too fast) pace, and this day I ran my first uninterrupted mile. It seems to happen only when I run hard for long. Can it happen simply from running longer/harder than you're used to?

How do you know if you're running anaerobically? Jeremy tried to explain it to me, but I didn't understand.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 16:04:02

If you feel the pace is not sustainable for more than a couple of minutes, you are running anaerobically. From what you've described, you probably have a lot of fast-twitch fiber muscles (being a very good sprinter but struggling with the distance), which means that it is very easy for you to go into anaerobic mode. For your training, this means you need to slow down and gradually build up your fitness. I would recommend initially alternating running and walking in some scheduled manner (e.g run 30 seconds walk 30 seconds) until your fitness rises to the point where you can comfortably run without stopping.

From Holly on Wed, Aug 15, 2007 at 13:35:18

That's funny, Sasha, that you think I probably have a lot of fast-twitch fiber muscles! Judging by my klutziness, Lybi is fairly convinced that I have a lot of SLOW-twitch muscles, from what you've told her. hehe I wonder...
