I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

On Sunday evening I could feel a sore throat coming on, and it arrived with a vengeance on Monday morning. The result was that I ate and drank almost nothing all day (even less because I had to fast all afternoon for an evening medical exam). By the time I had time to run, I felt so tired, sick, and generally crappy that I decided to skip the run altogether yesterday and eat Cold Stone instead.

Tonight I was feeling better, although far from 100 percent, so I headed to the gym for an easy treadmill run. Thirty minutes at 9:00. Almost no stress on the legs or lungs, but my nose and head were not happy. Still, I feel better having gone out. And I think I've gotten through the worst, so it should be better every day from here on out.

I'm feeling better than yesterday, but still stuffy and sneezy and such, so I took it easy again and did the exact same run as yesterday.

Third run this week, same as the first two.

I'm really digging the Minimuses. Minimi. New Balance shoes. Whatever.

I hit a pretty wild bump in my recovery last night. Catherine, Elliott and I were up at a family party at the Lion House for my grandma's eightieth birthday. I thought I was almost completely over my cold or whatever this is, but just before we went home I started to feel a little cold and sensitive all over. When we got home and I stepped out of the car, the weather felt too cold to handle, and I started shaking violently. An hour or so later I decided to take my temperature, which wound up being a shockingly high 103.5. Obviously, no run for me.

I was up against a deadline to submit a draft of my paper for one class, so I stayed up writing  till 2:00, fever and all (I wonder if the draft I submitted was full of delirious ramblings), before calling the hospital to see if I should go in. Obviously, they wouldn't say over the phone, so I stayed home and slept out on the couch so as not to infect Catherine and Elliott. A few hours later I woke up drenched in sweat but not feeling chilled. In the morning my temperature was down under 99. I'm not sure where that fever came from, but I'm glad it was brief.

Anyway, the late night fever left me feeling drained today, so I waited until tonight to head over to the gym and hobble through a short and easy (10:00/mile) run. It didn't feel great, but I was glad to be running.
