I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

We had a long, late day in the car last night, and we didn't arrive here in Pinecrest until well past midnight, and we probably weren't in bed until sometime after 2:00. So we slept in a lot, only getting up to feed and change Elliott when she needed it. I think we got out of bed around 2:00. It was nice to catch up on our sleep.

I just ran an easy 2 miles tonight. Still feeling pretty beat after Speedgoat.

I ran around Pinecrest Lake twice today: clockwise in the morning, counterclockwise in the evening.

Two more laps around the lake. One in the morning, one in the evening. Both clockwise.

The second was after dark. Very tricky on the trail.

I've really settled into a groove here--one lap around the lake in the morning, another in the evening. The trail is almost entirely flat, with a few sharp little climbs thrown in along the way. It's only four miles, but it's super technical. With all the rocks and roots, sometimes it feels like there's more running sideways than forward. I really enjoy it.

We're leaving bright and early tomorrow morning, so I decided to try a new route on our last day here. This morning I ran around the lake counterclockwise, but rather than crossing the dam near the end, I descended a trail into the little town of Strawberry (really just a collection of cabins). By the end of that I was only at 4.5 miles, so I threw in a road loop to pad the mileage a bit. If I feel good later, I may try to get out for one last lap around the lake this evening.

No running today--12+ hours in the car with an infant can have that effect.

Instead of writing about today's run, I'll point out that I did get out to run again yesterday. Twice--once on the trails, to Cleo's Bath with my brother in law (the water is insanely high this year) and once on the road with Catherine--pushing my daily total to over 21 and my weekly mileage to just under 50. Both are about as good as I've seen on a non-race day or week this year.

Now I'll back off and try not to hurt my knee--King's Peak is starting to look like a possibility this year.
