I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

So. The quantity and quality of my blogging has gone downhill since Elliott came. That's to be expected. Unfortunately, I can say the same about my running. But I don't think that's as much about the baby as it is about other things. Or an other thing. Mostly my knee. After a week it hurts like it did right before I took time off. I may go see a doctor again, but I don't think a doctor will tell me anything new. It looks like I may have to get back on the bike and wait this injury out. It also means I may not be running Speedgoat. Again.

Anyways, today I had an awful run on an awesome route. Dry Canyon to Battle Creek, Battle Creek to Trail 51, Trail 51 to Dry Canyon. I had planned to go farther, but, as mentioned above, it was an awful run, so I decided not to.

As a side note, despite my relative inactivity, I seem to have lost weight this week. Which means my bad run could be at least partly the result of not eating enough.

Also, I think I'm in the worst shape I've been in in years.

It's crazy trying to adjust to a whole new lifestyle. I feel for you. It will all fall into place though.

As for the injury, that really sucks. You've really been working on changing your form, haven't you? It's a shame really.

That's the same route Matt and I took on Friday except that we had a different starting place. Man, I LOVE that run. Was the upper part of Battle Creek, after crossing the stream, still torn up from the horses?

I hope you're right. Of course, the poor shape is more because of my knee than the newborn. Although the lack of sleep doesn't help :)

Yeah, that trail was still pretty trashed. At least we're not wading through the mud anymore, though.

For a nice finish to that route, try hitting the west face of Big Baldy at the end next time. Absolutely brutal. In a good way.
