Oh man Eric. I'm so sad. I wish you well. Please stay in touch.

From Nevels on Thu, Apr 08, 2010 at 13:03:37 from 131.204.15.93

Eric, I'm sorry to hear that. Wishing you the best, man. I hope you'll still hang around to post a comment or two every now and then...

From ChrisM on Thu, Apr 08, 2010 at 13:12:06 from 217.171.129.71

Gosh Eric that is awful I am really sorry to hear about that. You were doing awesome after giving up smoking and all the progress you made.

I'm pleased that your prognosis is good though and all the exercise you did will help as you must be pretty fit still.

Like Burt I would also like to wish you the best for the future, I really enjoy your blogs.

I hope everything works out for you,

From Burt on Thu, Apr 08, 2010 at 13:16:38 from 206.19.214.144

I'm also glad you got to run a marathon. So at least you can look back and say you did it.

From Bonnie on Thu, Apr 08, 2010 at 13:32:26 from 64.119.33.134

Oh Eric, what a difficult road you are traveling. I will be PM'ing you later today with some articles.

I am thinking about you.

From seeaprilrun on Thu, Apr 08, 2010 at 15:13:34 from 205.172.12.229

OH Eric! :( I am so sorry to hear about your news--what a lot to take in. You have accomplished so much--quitting smoking, running a marathon--what an incredible success story and inspiration! I will be looking up your kidney disorder and if I find anything interesting will send it your way. I hope you still hang out on the blog every now and then too!

From Kelli on Thu, Apr 08, 2010 at 17:12:44 from 71.219.92.128

Not running is not the end of the world, right? Totally not worth the risk, although I hope secretly someone will find some great articles that say otherwise!!! I wish you the VERY best in keeping it all under control and finding a new passion!

From Eric Day on Thu, Apr 08, 2010 at 18:31:26 from 200.77.33.222

Gee guys, you made me cry.

Now Burt will say I'm a big crybaby. Ni modo.

This is hard, I feel healthy; feel like I can put on my running shoes & hit the street, but no, I must not.

There is treatment, so all is not lost, at least yet.

Thanks, many thanks to all !

Un abrazo.

Oh, and yes, I'm a marathoner, at least I got there.

From Eric Day on Thu, Apr 08, 2010 at 18:33:14 from 200.77.33.222

And forgot to mention. House is almost done, in about 15-30 days, we'll move in.

I'll try posting a pic soon.

From Kelli on Fri, Apr 09, 2010 at 00:16:50 from 71.219.92.128

OH I can not wait to see the house!!!!

From ChrisM on Fri, Apr 09, 2010 at 04:02:53 from 130.88.123.4

That's cool the house is nearly ready!

Eric- I wish you the best of health! Thanks for the support!

From Camille on Sun, Apr 11, 2010 at 00:23:33 from 71.223.99.224

Eric - I'm so sad and so sorry. I hope you are feeling okay. Not running is better than running and risking something worse happening. I hope you keep in touch.

From RAD on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 14:16:24 from 67.172.229.125

Once a runner, always a runner!

I'm SO sorry that this has put an end to your running career! I hope you can find some articles that speak otherwise.

Good luck with the house and your health. Listen to the doctors and keep your head up, you will always be a runner.

From allie on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 15:29:37 from 67.177.0.102

Eric, I'm fairly new to this blog, but want to wish you the best of luck. I hope that the treatment you have had so far has been helpful, and that you are starting to feel better.

I also hope your kidneys recover enough that eventually your doctors allow you to run at least a little bit - perhaps 15 miles or so per week. So few miles probably would not fully satisfy your desire to run and train to be the "fastest you can be", but you might still enjoy it, and you would also receive many of the health benefits associated with running.

I am acquainted with a nephrologist (kidney doctor); the next time I see him I will ask his opinion about running with your condition. (It would be helpful to know what variant of FSGS you have - do you know if it is the "Tip Variant" type?)

I did find a running times article (http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=4193) that indicates you need to be very careful about using ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory medications, because they can harm the kidneys. Also strenuous exercise can cause damage to muscles, which in turn releases myoglobin. Excessive amounts of myoglobin can harm the kidneys, especially if you are dehydrated and have been using ibuprofen.

I'm not saying this to alarm you, but mostly to educate you in case your doctors eventually give you a green light to resume light running. And I very much hope they give you that green light. Best of luck to you, Eric. Take care, - Adele

From Eric Day on Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 10:18:46 from 200.77.35.169

The reason I have not posted a pic of the house is that I keep forgetting the darn camera. But soon, I promise.

Again, thanks all for the support.

I've been several days of the medicine, so far so good. Don't feel bad.

Adele, I'm very interested on your neph doctor acquaintance comments. Not sure what type of FSGS I have, will have to ask the doctor. All I can say, its in a very early stage. My kidney is still about 95%, so damage is low. And yes, doctor ordered me not to do any mass muscle building exercise.

Any literature you find or have would be great.

Many thanks !

Eric!

As you know I've been estranged from the blog, but our friend Montelepsy alerted me of this posting... You have an amazing attitude towards this issue, which says so much about what a great person you really are - I know I would be crying and complaining to heaven and hell...

I have enjoyed our healthy competition and it is my goal to beat your 10k time to be the ultimate winner of... the Eric Day Cup, since I already have you beat on the half and full marathon :) When I am ready to take on the challenge, I will wear the legendary Mexico headband once again!

With all my heart I wish you the best of luck with your health and with your life in general - the running community is going to miss your sense of humor and great attitude, while at the same time I am sure you will enjoy your bit of extra time with your family and spend some time in your new home.

Keep checking this blog every once in a while; my last semester in school ends this August so I'll be a big shot runner after that!

A big hug from Washington DC!

Your friend and fan,

Lucia

From Eric Day on Mon, Jun 07, 2010 at 10:10:18 from 189.192.8.107

Gee Lucia, I thought we had lost you ... glad to hear from you. Thank you, thank you, very much, for your lovely words of support. It has not been easy dealing with it, reading about it & that I have to take a lot of medicines (I don't like taking medicines).

So far so good, but can't call victory yet.

I do hope that, maybe, just maybe, if I go into remission, I can go back to running. Maybe you will hold the Eric Day Cup forever, but running is running and nobody can beat that! =)

BTW, house is almost finished, will probably moving in by the end of the month (finally!!!).

Glad to hear from you, keep in touch and " I WILL BE BACK" !

Hugs back from mexico, thanks for being my friend.

Eric
