Murray Days 5k today. I spent all day yesterday and all night with a 102 degree fever and the stomach flu. I actually didn't plan on running because I knew it wwould be awful. My fever broke this morning. I still felt nauseated and dehydrated but I thought sinc I paid for the race I might as well go and jog it. The whole family was participating.

When we got to the park I warmed up for two miles with Jenny. I knew I couldn't beat her, but noticed there wasn't a lot of competition. So I decided to try for a top three finish. It's amazing what a little money does for your motivation. I decided to feel out the first mile and then go from there.

The gun went off and Jenny jumped to the front. I eased into it. About 6:05 for the first mile. I was in second at the mile. I tried to open it up on the downhill second mile. 5:54. The hurt set in in mile three. I started feeling dizzy and felt like I might throw up. I just concentrated on holding onto 2nd. 6:19 (ouch!) I crossed in 18:24. The course only measured 3.03. 6:06 average. Not spectacular, but respectable under the conditions. We'll call it a marathon pace tempo. I'm hoping for a huge improvement at Draper Days 5k.

I cooled down very slowly for 2.5 miles with Teren. Then I ran the half mile kids race with Lily.

I'm glad I ran, even though I felt horrible. It was good toughness training.

Great race under the conditions. I felt like vomiting in mile 3 and I am healthy!

Emily - your race report tells a story that explains what it takes to win. The devils gather against you and knock you down, but you get up and you compete. Maybe not a PR and not the time you hoped for, but that does not matter. What matters is that when the circumstances conspire to crush you you find the strength to shake your fist at them. I hope the smart reader will learn something when he reads this report.

You will be a small speck in my sights in front of me at Draper days, rather than barely being able to beat you today. Good run, I guess we all slowed down that last mile. Nice to see you.

Thanks for the supportive comments. Sasha, I think it is important to be smart and not do something that will hurt your body. However, from time to time, it is good to run when you're not 100%. It makes you a stronger person and runner. I've tried to stop defining my success as a runner based solely on measurable outcomes. I still want to run fast times, but I've also started to define my successes based on what I can overcome mentally. Maybe it's getting older, but I'm trying to enjoy my running experience more, to test myself, to make good running friends, and enjoy and appreciate the journey as much if not more than the destination. Goals are important, but sometimes they blind us to the lessons learned during the process. So, yes I am glad I chose to run yesterday. It wasn't my best effort, but my body actually surprised me. Plus, I came out 75 dollars richer! :)

^i really like this, esp "goals are important, but sometimes they blind us to the lessons learned during the process." very true.

good job. it sounds like you were feeling pretty miserable, but you still brought "it" and did your best. i love the determination.

Sure, enjoy the journey. But someone ought to tell your husband. I know he's not as fast as he was in college, but good grief, it seems he can run a fast 5k whenever he wants to. Talk about mental toughness. You can tell him I said so.

Yes, Teren is a freak of nature. And extremely mentally tough!
