Hmmm.   That was not an encouraging workout.

As I was walking out the door, I noticed it was VERY windy this morning.  Teren was so encouraging.  "It's not that bad."  he told me.  So, off to the track I went.  I warmed up 2.5 miles, with 4 x 200. My workout was 6 x 1000.  I thought I could keep around 3:30.  Nope.

3:27  (Good, but huge effort.)  3:37 (Uh, oh.)  About here I thought about turning it into a fartlek workout instead, but decided to persevere.  3:38.3, 3:37.9, 3:38.6, (thought about calling it good at 5.  Decided to persevere.) 3:38.11.  I'm glad they were all under 3:40 at least.  I felt like I was running into a wall on the home stretch.  My splits were all over the place, but the overall times were very consistent.  I had envisioned a taper-tastic workout, where I felt amazing and ran super fast.  Nope.  Teren, it WAS that bad.  Blame it on the wind, right?  The pluses, I kept at it and finished the workout I set out to do.  I was extremely consistent after the first sprint-fest.  Finally, I think I could have run more of them if I absolutely had to.

Cooled down 2.5 miles home.

It wasn't windy at all here...you should have come to Cottonwood! :) Don't get discouraged...my workout yesterday was really hard for me too! I think we have to realize that we've put in some really hard training over the past 4 months and we are bound to be tired at times. Yes, we are tapering but not "completely" at this point. There is still a week and a half so we aren't 100% right now (and we shouldn't be! That should come on October 5th). Overall, I think you had a great workout!

I had a day like this last Tuesday... the wind was awful. Running a 4:45 1600 that day felt like 4:30 effort.

Don't start second guessing ANYTHING now!!! :-)

On windy days you just have to go off of effort and not worry about the clock. It was pretty windy up here this morning too and my last two miles into the wind were much slower than usual. But the effort felt right and that's what matters.

Also, it's very typical to feel "off" during a taper. I actually always feel worse in a workout when I scale it back a tad from the norm (taper or not). I think we often think workouts during a taper should feel fresh and easy and in reality they don't feel any easier, and if we go in thinking they should be easy we are in for an awakening. At least that's my experience.

I wouldn't worry a bit about this workout. You're fine. And this was plenty fast to maintain your fitness for next weekend.

Great workout Em! The one thing I hate running in is wind. I like Riley's advice on the taper. I have noticed that I feel alittle off during this taper. Good to know others feel it too:)
