Personal:

I'm married to a very supportive, although slightly less enthusiastic runner than I.  Alisha has run a little with me and participated in several 5k's, but mostly she supports me at races.  She ran her first half in November, 2011.  We have a son who was born in 2010, the year that I ran my first marathon.  I participated in my first Triathlon in April 2011.  I think I may have been bitten by the Ironman bug.  Though an Ironman finish is a long term goal, I want to BQ first.

I find that the more I run the more I want to run.  I consider my self a running addict.  I like the motto: pain is weakness leaving your body.

71 degrees, 94% humidity.  I felt really strong this morning, and ran a pretty easy pace of 7:56.  Taking yesterday off really helped overcome the lagging soreness I felt when I woke up.

I'm going to focus on sleep and nutrition going forward this year.  I have only been averaging about 6 to 7 hours a night, and I can tell I'm going to need more than that in order to fully recover from each workout.

I've also been reading Scott Jurek's new book Eat and Run.  I'm about half way through it, and I highly recommend to it to other runners.  He chronicles his life story, including how his plant based diet helped him win Western States seven times.  He has lots of recipes for vegan meals at the end of every chapter as well for those interested.  I've been impressed with his running career ever since I read about him in Born to Run, and I've been slightly interested in the vegan or vegetarian diet since late February of this year.  It seems to be that many of the great ultra runners are either vegan or they incorporate a vegetarian diet into their daily nutritional plans.  Jurek claims that after he switched to the vegan diet he was able to recover much faster from long runs.  This all sounds appealing to me.

While I wouldn't become a vegetarian if my life depended on it, it is an interesting take.

I also get no more than 7 hours of sleep, usually 6. Tough to get more with young kids, as I'm sure you know, but man does it help recovery when you can. If only we didn't have to work for a living!

I have been experimenting with what some call a flexitarian diet for much of this year. I pretty much eliminated all meat except fish and chicken occasionally. I will probably never give up my eggs for breakfast. I like them too much, and everything I read about eggs supports tremendous health benefits especially for distance runners.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one struggling to get more than 6 hours of sleep. I'm also glad to know it is possible to attain your level of fitness on said sleep since my goal of getting more is probably unattainable.
