Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

Woke up with my internal alarm clock.  I decided to drive down to Lake Austin trail.  I did the 7 mile loop with an out and back add on down LAB.  Got something going on behind my right knee - never had pain there before but it has been bothering me for a couple of runs now.  For some reason it got better during the last 3 miles today.  8:10 AP for the run.

Merry Christmas David! Hope your knee thing is nothing -- good news that it went away late in the run I think.

I had that tendon back there flare up after my last marathon but it went away after a few days. Hope it works itself out - merry Christmas to you.

Hope that pain goes away with a few days off, you put in a big year of training ... A week of rest should have you ready for 2012. :)

Hope your knee is better and you're just taking a long rest. You deserve it after the great year of running you've had!!!

Well guys, it has been a heck of a week. Last Friday my wife came down with something. We thought it was just the Flu. On Saturday she went into a clinic and they told her she needed to go to the ER. Her heart rate was 150 and she tested negative for the flu. She was diagnosed with pneumonia and admitted to the hospital. Me and my two little ones had to spend Christmas day without her. And with all of our friends out of town and no family I had to pull double duty. My wife came home on Tuesday but I have been taking care of her and the kids. Therefore, no time for running! It has been a forced break but probably good for me. Fortunately, she is on the mend. Everyone is happy to have her home again. The docs at the hospital said that the pneumonia on the x-ray could actually be a tumor. We went back to her regular doc yesterday and he said it was 100% pneumonia - so that was a relief. But we were quite fearful for a couple of days. Goes to show you how short life can be and that we need to enjoy each day we are here.

Wow David,

Glad to hear it's just pneumonia! It doesn't sound right to say that but compared to a tumor it's minor. I"ll be praying for a quick recovery and hopefully you guys can make up for the missed Christmas in the next few days.

Glad to hear your wife is back home ... wishing her a speedy recovery!!!

Scary - I'm glad she is getting better and recovering. Rotten timing on Christmas, but good news overall.

You'll get a nice reset before 2012.
