Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

Low 70's and humid at 5:00 am.  I ran 6 miles - 1 mile warm up @ 9:20 and then 7:40's.  Circled back home and met up with Kevin, a running buddy who moved close by recently.  We will get together on occasion and run together if we are not going downtown for a group run.  He drove over to my house.  I had to slow my pace back down for a mile or so to let him get warmed up and then we picked it up again.  I took him on my favorite hill route.  I am not sure he wants to run with me again any time soon - hehe.  It is a killer and I looped it so that we got hills going and coming back.  We ran 8 miles and I dropped him off and finished out one more mile close to 7:00 pace for a total of 15 miles.  We hit some good paces.  Overall average was 7:50's and that was with with the slower warm-up miles and the hills.

So...How good of a friend is Kevin? Sounds like you were trying to "lose" him as a friend....literally...! :)

You are a maniac. Hills both ways? Sounds like my dad's description of walking to school when he was a kid.

Someone remind me to never run with the sadistic derhammer next time I'm in Austin!

Hey, great mileage for a mid-week run. My plan for building mileage this summer includes a lot of these MLRs...in the heat. Good to know it's survivable (for you anyway).

From derhammer on Tue, May 10, 2011 at 14:53:56 from 192.156.110.39

Yeah, I kinda feel sorry for him now. He didn't know what hit him. He's a strong runner and has a 3:10 marathon PR so I really did not think it would be that much of a problem for him. The heat did not help, that's for sure.

SJ - I got the midweek long run from Pfitzinger's Advanced Marathoning book. I think it has made a big difference for me. Really, most of my training is based around his plans with some tweaks here and there.

Interesting, I was kind of shopping marathon training plans and I saw his 18/70 plan and it looked exactly like what I wanted. I think I will use it for Houston this fall. I'd much rather do something like 15,5,15,5, etc than run 10 miles every day; I like being fresh for the tougher ones. The crappy part will be waking up early on those days!

From derhammer on Tue, May 10, 2011 at 15:30:14 from 192.156.110.39

I think there is much validity to that type of training. Kevin Beck, who works with Pete, drafted a preliminary training plan for my Austin training based on the longer/harder workouts with the 5-7 mile recovery runs in between. If you want I will email it to you so you can take a look. Also, when doing this training I found a critical part was to take every 3rd or 4th week as a recovery week and cut total mileage by 15-20 miles. This gave my body a chance to recover and let the adaptations of training take place and limiting the chance of injury.

Don't want to be a butt, I mean butt in on ya'll conversation, but I would like to see the KB plan... :)

I might just change my name to "I Just Run What I'm Told"

Sounds smart, I will definitely work in those recovery weeks as I build mileage. And thanks, I'd love to take a look at that plan -- I'll send you a PM with my email.
