Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

I really thought I had platar fasciitis but Doc says everything points to stress fracture even though x-ray came back negative.  The tech said x-ray might not reveal a small fracture.

No running for min of 4 weeks and see if the time off improves symptoms.

Boo hoo.

Wow, that stinks. I hope that doctor knows what he's talking about -- 4 weeks is a long time for a negative x-ray! Sorry to hear that. Speedy recovery.

Man..... Bummer. 4 weeks is a long time. It's so hard to hang them up, but you gotta get better. I hope your doctor's a marathoner and understands what not running can do to a guy. :-)

A chiropractor...bah, get back out there!

I'm just kidding, I guess she must be pretty sure (how sexist of me to assume it was a male) or she wouldn't give that kind of layoff to a fellow runner. Can you defer St George, or are you holding out hope?

From Rob Murphy on Wed, Aug 06, 2014 at 19:32:33 from 24.10.247.181

My son is eight and has never seen a male doctor. Last year driving home from a check-up he asked if boys could be doctors.

Four weeks does seem ridiculously long for a stress fracture that can't be seen. I'd go by feel rather than a set time period.

From derhammer on Thu, Aug 07, 2014 at 07:39:54 from 199.116.171.53

@SJ - pretty sure St. George is out - not interested in running another marathon on substandard training - no fun at all. I haven't thought of deferring - I should look into that.

@Rob - sure, I will go by feel. I took 2 weeks off recently on my trip to Europe and that didn't cure it - but again I was on my feet a lot and doing tons of walking.

From I Just Run on Thu, Aug 07, 2014 at 09:24:53 from 67.79.11.242

I feel your pain in being out for 4 weeks. I was out for 7 weeks and seemed to lose everything. I'm really suffering for it now. Is the doctor a foot specialist? I went to a male doctor who is actually a runner. Don't know if he was better/more knowlegeable but it sure made me feel better.

How is it doing now?

From derhammer on Mon, Sep 01, 2014 at 19:18:38 from 24.55.24.67

Going on week 4 this week - seems to be getting better but still hurts at times. Been keeping busy cross training and weight training - trying to get stronger. I figure 6-8 weeks total time off will be needed.

From I Just Run on Mon, Sep 15, 2014 at 10:09:47 from 67.79.11.242

Hey DH,

It's about time...How are you doing?

From derhammer on Sun, Sep 21, 2014 at 06:04:10 from 24.55.24.67

Thanks for checking in ... now being referred to an Orthopedic surgeon - seeing him on Wed. Not a huge improvement which is very strange. Spending too much time in the gym - getting strong but putting on too much muscle. Getting tired of those spinning classes too. But I have to do something!

From Matt Schreiber on Sun, Sep 21, 2014 at 20:16:17 from 66.17.102.175

The surgeon doesn't sound like fun, but I'm guessing you're to the point where you're ready to get something done. Good luck on Wednesday.

Way to keep at the gym btw. It'd be easy enough to get down about not being able to run and skip out on everything altogether. Keep it up!

From I Just Run on Mon, Sep 22, 2014 at 09:31:35 from 67.79.11.242

Dang....!

Hope the surgeon figures it out and can fix it!

From derhammer on Mon, Sep 22, 2014 at 09:46:22 from 199.116.171.85

it's been a nice break, but now that the weather is cooling down I am starting to miss running.

From derhammer on Wed, Sep 24, 2014 at 15:48:52 from 199.116.171.78

got a clean bill of health fracture/bone spur wise. He is 100% sure it's Plantar. Also got a steroid shot in the heel - ouch - to help with inflammation, and a number of someone else who can help with working out issues.

He also said chronic issues like this can take months. Hopefully not that long!

From SlowJoe on Wed, Sep 24, 2014 at 17:20:36 from 107.77.80.96

Glad it's not bone related! I was telling Matt the other day that I had PF for 2 years, but it must've been pretty mild - always bothered me for the first 5-10 min of a run, then went away so I ignored it. Finally it disappeared after a marathon. Hope you are back at it soon!

From I Just Run on Thu, Sep 25, 2014 at 10:53:04 from 67.79.11.242

Glad you got some answers. I hope that steroid shot does the trick! I'm ready to see you back running and blogging!

From Yasir on Tue, Sep 30, 2014 at 10:50:54 from 99.20.240.112

hey David sorry for not witting but I have been following your progress. Good luck and hurry back.

From JG on Sun, Oct 12, 2014 at 16:44:06 from 73.52.74.101

David. I battled PF for 9 months, tried just about everything ... it did not get better until I started wearing these:

http://www.feeturesrunning.com/index.php/plantar-fasciitis-sleeve

It could be a coincidence, but after wearing them at night for 2 weeks, I was able to start training pain-free ... after trying everything under the sun for 9 months! I would say it is worth $50 investment! Sometimes I ran with them, but mostly just put them on in the evening and took them off in the morning. Hope it clears up soon for you!
