Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

I'll have to ping you for info later on the aussie carb load.

Stay safe out there tomorrow and enjoy!

Congrats on your first Boston. I can't imagine how brutal it must've been, but hopefully you made some good memories.

At least you got your money's worth - if you had finished in 3 hours, you would've only spent 3/4 of the time on the historic course!

That's one way to look at it. You would have done fine. I caved mentally at mile 14, couldn't control my heart rate, baked by the sun, legs never felt good, and have been under huge mental stress personally lately, so it was the perfect storm for a bad marathon. I think around mile 20 the clock was 3:04, I was thinking I should have been done by then. At that point my goal was to stay under 4 hours.

Sorry for the crash David but I don't think you should beat yourself up about this race. I have read all of the race reports and even though people are saying "I learned a lot from this race" I really don't think there was anything to learn other than "this was not a race!". You know, in the scheme of things (including your running) this has very little impact on the truly important things in life. You'll bounce back and run a "rediculous" marathon soon. Keep you head up...you're one of my mentors! :-)

Don't disappear on us ... there is no shame in a tough marathon in 80+ degree weather ... hope you enjoyed the weekend! I am pretty sure I saw you a couple times on the course, but did not realize it because I figured it was not you ... but I clearly remember a tall guy with no shirt that looked familiar ... I should have called out your name and seen if I got a response! There is no doubt you will bounce back with a vengeance!

JG - not too worry, some day I will get around to writing down my experience. I wore grey framed sunglasses with orange lenses.
