Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

Hi Der Hammer,

I'm back.... Kinda out of pocket for a few days. That's a good profile picture at the Austin Marathon. I think I'll buy my picture too...Maybe it's time for me to post a real picture of myself:)

Solid - you had a great run on Saturday. I'm noticing the hydration belt on the new photo -- do you find the water stops aren't enough when it's warm out? I sweat like a pig and noticed I ended up really dehydrated in my only full, and the HM I just did, even though I took liquids at every stop and started the race fully hydrated...both races were warm. Curious if that's why you bring the extra liquids, or if it's just easier for you.

IJR - Welcome back. I was kinda partial to the picture of Gumby that you had. :-)

Slow Joe - I like to carry my own belt for half and full marathons. I like to be able to have a drink when I want. The side pouch is handy to carry salt tabs, shotblocks, and my ipod, too. If you don't have a pair you should get some Race Ready shorts. They have lots of pouches for gels, etc. They only sell them online and at Expos.

Gumby is cool but I considered myself the one standing behind him.....Polkey...:)

Hey...BTW...why aren't you sweating in your profile picture?

That is one of life's mysteries. I, like SlowJoe, usually sweat buckets. I remember about mile 4 going up Congress when one of my co-runners made a remark that I wasn't sweating at that point. I don't have a clue as to why not - as you know it was mid 60's and 70-80% humidity that morning. Maybe that stiff breeze that was out there helped in keeping my body cooler. At the end of the race my shorts were not even wet. Very odd, indeed.

I like the new picture too. I carry my own water because it is easier for me to drink out of a bottle than a cup.
