Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

warm - humid - something like 70 degrees this morning.  After today and yesterday it has dawned on me how luck all those Houston marathoners were - one more day and it would have been disaster.  Thankfully, the weather stayed cool.  Anyway, this does not bode well for the Austin marathon, but one never knows.

So today was a 3 mile warm up followed by 1000m intervals around a hilly neighborhood, and I mean hilly.  Wow - it was crazy. The last 100m was up a nice big hill. I have not done this workout in a couple of years and now I remember why - it hurts.  In fact, it was a big time crash and burn, I can't remember a worse workout.

Could be the 12 mile run yesterday on the hills, the lingering effects of Saturday's hard run, the hot weather, or all three.  Not to mention that I probably ran these too fast to start with.  I wanted to do 5 but all I could manage was 4.  The fourth one I missed a turn and had to find my way back so I don't even know if that counts.  I had to sit on the curb after that one to let my heart rate come back down.  I was not a happy camper.

The only smart thing I did was wear my old Brooks shoes as I have been having bit of achilles/calf soreness - no problems today with the big heel.

1000m @ 6:10 pace

1000m @ 5:52 pace

1000m @ 6:15 pace (legs going away at this point)

1000m @ ?? pace

Finished with 3 mile run back to the annex.

Ha ha...I did some 1000's and a 2000 today but mine were on the track...a lot easier I'm sure. I also cut my intervals short by one 1000 by mistake :-( I wasn't feeling great either, must be the change in weather.

David, the condictions were tough and its a tough course (it lingers in my memory too). Besides you've had so many great run lately that one bad one shouldn't get you down. You can hold you head high, you're headed to Boston and will run a fantastic time!!!

That was a hard work out. I was definitely reminded of what summer training was like and how lucky we have been with the cool weather lately.

Also - those hills (up and down!) were brutal. I am ready for some flat track work this Thursday!

IJR - I saw that - you need to run an extra tempo mile like you suggested!

James - not upset at all, a bad workout here or there is to be expected. I just didn't expect to fall apart that badly.

Dasha, it was tough. Yes, not looking forward to spring at all. I looked at my calendar from last year and the warm weather had already started by late March. Thursday is Fartlek on the trail day - I think I am going to run a 12-14 mile medium long run instead.

Ha ha...I'm all about punishment :-)

Oh yeah, good point on Thursday! I hadn't checked the Boston schedule. Rest of the group had track.

The 12-14 miler sounds like a better idea.

I agree with the 'all of the above', you have been killing it and throw in the warmer temps... there ya have it. Nice running all the same.

I noticed that on the weather...it would've sucked indeed.

Maybe the #2 repeat started the lactate flow a bit early, but either way I'm sure you'll bounce back. Nice to know you have a human track workout every now and then!
