Ponderosa Pine Relay leg 6 6.96 miles

12:41pm

Pace: 7:53

I was running the last leg for our van, so I was able to see the rest of the team dying in the heat. I was a little worried. We didn't manage that transition very well, arriving there very shortly before our runner, so I had to hurry to get myself ready and run to the handoff point. I took the wristband and took off. After a little ways I looked down and saw that my pace was 6:15. Way too fast for 95 degrees. I slowed down some but held a decent pace most of the way. There was a pretty big hill in the middle of the route and when I crested it I was at an even 8mpm. I was able to make up some time going back down, but it was dang hot. I carried a water bottle and had the guys in the van replenish it with cold water several times because it got warm so fast.

They changed the legs so that mine was shorter and Wil's was longer. But, since he was running double legs, we traded. This run was at night on a trail through the bear-infested forest, running toward the town of New Meadows. I had my headlamp pointed down and the spot of light started sending me into the twilight zone. Once I tilted it back up I started feeling better.
