Personal:

I was married in 1997 to my beautiful wife Lybi (confessions of a piano teacher on the blog), and we have 3 wonderful boys who are just as active as I was when I was little (he he). I grew up in southeastern Michigan, and my family became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 6. I attended BYU, and served a mission in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from BYU with a degree in Health and Human Performance (pre-physical therapy), I promptly changed careers and started working with computers (although no programming for me). We have moved across the country several times, and currently live in Mesa, AZ.  I work in computer security for a major nationwide homebuilder.

Ran 7 easy miles this morning.  Woke up tired, took me a bit to get going on the run.  After about a mile, I was able to settle into a pretty good rhythm.  Total time for the run was 57:39, average pace of 8:14/mile.  Glad I got out to run this morning, rather than in the evening.  It is still too hot in the evening, even at 9:00.  I need to work on getting to bed early enough this week.  Nothing much else to talk about - nothing special about this run.  I intend to make this entire week an easy week in terms of pace - no tempo runs, just get in the mileage.  Planning on 50+ miles this week - I am absolutely amazed at how I have gotten here.

James - I keep saying that it is not the miles, it is the beds that make champions. Sleep is critical. Doug Padilla is notorious for crediting a good portion of his success to his sleep. Miles without sleep is like work without depositing or cashing your paycheck. Your socks have helped our family get to bed on time. Maybe you can find some sort of punishment that will have a similar effect on you.

Well, I totally agree with Sasha. But I don't think that you went to bed too late last night. More like you slept fitfully most of the night. I feel kinda bad bc the reason you were tired was because of me.

That long nap on Sunday messed me all up and I was up half the night! I was trying to be good and stay in bed, but I was thrashing around a lot--which wakes you up a little bit, but not enough to remember anything. Sorry! No more long naps for me.

Regardless of the reason for not sleeping well enough, I need to get to bed nice and early tonight. We will have to figure out a good consequence for me as an additional motivation. I appreciate the comments, Sasha. I totally agree that sleep is a critical factor, not only in running/racing well, but also in avoiding injury. I will set a goal of 9:30 bedtime tonight and will report on my success tomorrow :)

The more mileage I do, the more sleep I need! This weekend I took 2 naps on Saturday and 1 nap on Sunday -- in addition to the standard 8 hrs at night. Despite the naps, I still sleep at night like a baby, so if anything I can use more. I pretty much force myself to go to bed at 10PM.

Sasha - Funny that you mention Doug Padilla and the sleeping. I had a few coaching sessions with him prior to my senior year in high school (almost 20 years ago) and the one thing that I remember him saying is that you need an extra hour of sleep each day for every 10 miles that you run.
